Al Bowlly – Britain’s First Pop Star
Fridays 1903 – 1930
from 28 December
Al Bowlly was the British voice of the 1930s.
With popular songs like Love Is The Sweetest Thing and The Very Thought of You he voiced the dreams, aspirations and style of the inter-war years.
In the 1930s the singer was just another band member and it was the dance band leaders who had the superstar status - but Al Bowlly was to change all of that.
This four-part series takes you through Al's colourful life with the best songs from his huge catalogue of work and exclusive interviews with Bowlly biographers, fans and friends, including the 96 year old Mrs Joyce Stone who is the last person alive to have been friends with Al.
