The Dubliners
Saturday
Watch the performance.
There's lots of earnest debate about where the future of folk lies, not least on our message boards. It's something of a relief, then, to find The Dubliners doing exactly what they've always done, and doing it very well. Completely professional, they can't claim to be breaking down any barriers with their music. But who cares?
Certainly not the crowd, who welcome them on stage for a vibrant set which is, in effect, a greatest hits medley. I'm sure anyone reading this could come up with the set list. For the record, we get a collection of standards you could hear in any of those horrible ersatz Oirish bars any night of the week; The Foggy Dew, Whiskey in the Jar, Seven Drunken Nights, The Irish Rover… the list goes on.
But you don't often hear them performed with such good humour or skill. After all, these guys have been playing this stuff for 40 years. As such, they're the perfect act to help while away a rainy afternoon. Sink a couple of pints, have a good time and sing your head off. Let's face it, you all know the words.
