SUNDAY

Following the deluge of Saturday night, Sunday starts dry, although it doesn't last. By mid afternoon the showers have returned (or should I say the deluge) and there's a squeeze of people trying to get into the marquees. Some brave souls are determined to sit it out, and when the sun finally comes out we find Andy from Harlow displaying admirable disdain for the elements, sitting resplendent in Hawaiian shirt and caring not a jot for the sea of mud before him.

The sun also brings out the children. Rachel from Rotherham is busy displaying a prowess on the diablo which would shame many circus performers. Lara and Jasmine from Yarmouth entertain themselves in the music shop tent having a go on the drums. Of course, the only one's not complaining about the weather are the ducks and geese around at the pond - they're more bothered by the attentions of the children who seem intent on chasing them all afternoon.

But there are few stranger sites than that of Mark Radcliffe and Eliza Carthy being helped up a ladder onto the roof of a portakabin, where they proceed to record a link for BBC 4. Mark is properly dressed for the occasion in wellies and anorak, but Eliza's red skirt and tailored jacket aren't really appopriate for scrabbling around on a muddy roof. Still, she copes like the true professional.

We spend a very pleasant half hour in the company of Cara Dillon and Sam Lakeman, who chat to us about what they're up to. Teenage sensations and Young Folk Award winners Give Way are also chuffed to get their picture taken with Cara, adding to the glow they've got following their successful appearance on the main stage.

Kate Rusby manages to arrive on stage looking pristine, although she does say she's got her wellies with her. In fact, the only ones not covered in various layers of grime are the artists. One unfortunate victim of the rain is the backstage massage tent, which collapses under the weight of the water with the unfortunate therapists inside.

John Prine gets the biggest ovation of the day, perhaps because he's back after cancelling last year due to a broken elbow. The Indigo Girls are also well received, but the evening is rounded off in boisterous fashion by Salsa Celtica. As the tent bulges at the seams with dancing revellers, it's easy to forget the rain and the mud and join the fun as Cambridge ends another year on a high note.

See you next year!
