Chart star tenor Vittorio Grigolo joins the BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Gavin Sutherland, for Radio 2’s Easter edition of Friday Night Is Music Night.
Paul Gambaccini presents the programme, which also features The Choir Boys, and was recorded in March at the Mermaid Theatre in London.
VITTORIO GRIGOLO
Vittorio Grigolo was born in Rome and began his singing career as a choirboy – singing in the glory of the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel. As a child he took part in a production of Tosca at the Rome Opera House with Luciano Pavarotti in the role of Cavaradossi. The great
singer was so impressed that he hailed Vittorio as 'Il Pavarottino' – 'Little Pavarotti' – and the nickname has stuck with the Italian press ever since.
At 18 he was singing with the Vienna Opera and at the age of 23 became the youngest Italian tenor to sing at La Scala. Vittorio plans to continue his opera career alongside his pop crossover work – most recently he sang Cassio in Otello at the Gran Teatre del Liceti
in Barcelona. In this concert he sings Maria from Westside Story and his cover versions of Keane’s Bedshaped and Stevie Wonder’s All In Love Is Fair.
THE CHOIR BOYS
From one former choirboy the programme moves to three young British choristers at the start of their musical careers, The Choir Boys: Patrick Aspbury, Ben Inman and CJ Porter Thaw. The three boys come from the cathedral choirs of Ely, Southwell and Sheffield, respectively.
Just returned from a tour of Japan, the angelic threesome count 50 Cent, Jamie Cullum and the Red Hot Chili Peppers as their favourite music acts. Tonight they sing Pie Jesu
from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Requiem, Howard Goodall’s setting of The Lord Is My Shepherd and Cesar Franck’s Panis Angelicus.
