Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist Award 2011

Lewis Musson

Euphonium player Lewis Musson from Hulme, Manchester was named winner of the 2011 Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist Award.

  • Frank Renton presented the final of the 2011 Young Brass Soloist Award on Saturday 19 February at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where the following four players competed for the title.

    Michael Cavanagh, aged 16 from Stockport, who plays baritone horn
    James Mcleod, aged 19 from Tyne and Wear, who plays the euphonium
    Jonathan Bates, aged 15 from Huddersfield, who plays tenor horn
    Lewis Musson, aged 20 from Manchester, who plays the euphonium

    The finalists were accompanied by The Black Dyke Band and were judged by Paul Archibald, one of the country's leading trumpet players, and tuba maestro Les Neish.

    As well as receiving the Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist trophy, Lewis Musson now has the unique opportunity to play with the BBC Concert Orchestra on Radio 2's flagship live music programme Friday Night Is Music Night , and to play as a soloist with one of the UK's top brass bands at a prestigious event.
