The
BBC Concert Orchestra salutes
Petula Clark as she sings all her greatest hits and more, with special guests
Michael Ball and
Tony Hatch.
Petula Clark is Britain's most successful solo recording artist of all time. Known for a series of movie appearances in the 1940s and 1950s, she scored a string of hit records before reaching the top spot in the UK chart in 1961 with Sailor. However, her pop career was well and truly launched when Downtown - which she recorded in four languages - swept the world in 1964. Hits that followed included My Love, I Couldn't Live Without Your Love, This Is My Song and Don't Sleep In The Subway.
A second stint in films resulted in Finian's Rainbow, Goodbye Mr Chips and Never Never Land, and she returned to the West End stage for The Sound Of Music, Blood Brothers and Sunset Boulevard. Petula Clark continues to tour, singing to packed houses worldwide.
The concert will be broadcast on Radio 2 in a special
Friday Night Is Music Night programme on Friday 15 December at 1930.
