RADIO 2 YOUNG BRASS SOLOIST 2005 Grand Final on-air: Friday 4 March at 2130

The grand final of Radio 2's Young Brass Soloist 2005 competition, hosted by Listen To The Band's Frank Renton, took place at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
Congratulations to Brenden Wheeler, who was named this year's winner. He received a specially designed trophy, and later in the year he'll appear as guest soloist at Radio 2's live music festival, accompanied by a top championship band.
Brenden Wheeler - Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist 2005
Twenty year old Brenden Wheeler, who plays euphonium, is a native of Cairns in Australia. Brenden is currently studying music at the University of Salford in Manchester, and plays with the Hepworth (Persimmon Homes) Band.
Vicki Reynolds
A tenor horn player from Leicestershire, who plays with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and the 1st section Hathern Band. Vicki, was the youngest finalist at 14 years old.
Sophie Rhodes
Keeping it in the family was 19 year old euphonium player Sophie Rhodes from Harrogate, whose sister Lucy was the Radio 2 Young Chorister of the Year in 2002. Sophie is currently studying medicine at Pembroke College in Cambridge, and plays with the Soham Comrades band.
Nick Walkley
Cornetist Nick Walkley, originally from Gloucestershire and now based in Manchester, was the principal cornet with the Fairey FP (Music) Band, and has just been signed by European Champions, the YBS Band, as their soprano cornet player.
The Judges
The Principal Trombonist of the Halle Orchestra, Andrew Berryman, and principal horn player with the Yorkshire Building Society band, Sheona White, were the judges of this year's competition.
