The grand final of Radio 2's Young Brass Soloist 2006 competition, hosted by Listen To The Band's Frank Renton, took place at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

Congratulations to Ben Thomson, a 19 year old tuba player from Manchester, who has won this year's competition. Ben is the first tuba player to have won the event, after being the first tuba player to have made it through to the finals.

Currently studying at The Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, Ben was principal tuba with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain for two years and is currently a reserve member of the European Youth Orchestra.

Find out about the other three finalists below and take a look at our finalists gallery.

Steven Haynes
The 20 year old trombonist from Wakefield is a student at the Royal College of Music in London and has just completed a short study placement in Vienna. Winner of the Julius Isserlis Scholarship awarded by the Royal Philharmonic Society and the Maud Wright Award, Steven has played and recorded with The Grimethorpe Colliery (UK Coal) Band, The Fairey Band and the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra.

Daniel Powell
Daniel, who is 20 and from Leicester, plays first horn with The Brighouse and Rastrick band. He is a second year student at The Royal Northern College of Music Manchester and was a winner of a 2004 BBC Fame Academy Award.

Kate Eggleshaw
Kate, from Sheffield, is the second tenor horn soloist and at 16 is principal horn of both the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band. Kate is a student at the Royal Northern College of Music Junior School and won a BBC Fame Academy in 2003. She is the youngest finalist in the competition.

The finalists performed their chosen piece of music accompanied by The Black Dyke Band and conductor Nicholas Childs. They were judged by Jamie Prophet, principal trumpet with The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor and adjudicator Linda Nicholson.
