BLACKPOOL ILLUMINATIONS
Friday 2 September at 2030-2130
This programme is available to hear again for seven days after broadcast via the BBC Radio Player.
This year Radio 2 brought a superb line up to launch Blackpool Illuminations. Plus, the inimitable Chris Evans not only hosted a live one hour show but flicked the 'Big Switch' to switch on six miles of Blackpool's Promenade as the world-famous Illuminations shone out once more.
Live from the BBC Radio 2 stage, thousands enjoyed performances by some of the biggest names in pop. Lee Ryan was joined by Mica Paris, McFly, Rachel Stevens and fresh from their sell-out UK and international tour, 80's pop duo Erasure.
So innovative was the original event that it actually preceded by twelve months Thomas Edison's patent of the humble electric light bulb, which eventually lit the way for the Blackpool Illuminations enjoyed by millions of visitors today.
