Sheila Tracy presents the 30th Radio 2 National Big Band Competition All-Winners Concert, recorded at Birmingham's CBSO Centre. See pictures from the event.
It also features individual prize-winners - Ray Chester, who won Radio 2's arranger's prize, guitarist Nick Kellie, who took the John Dankworth prize for most promising young musician, trumpeter Percy Purslgove, who won Radio 2's soloist prize, guitarist Simon King, who was awarded the Musician's Union outstanding musician's prize, trombonist Andy Derrick, winner of the Don Lusher trombone prize, and Natasha Buxton, who took the Kenny Clare drum prize.
There are hundreds of bands throughout the UK playing big band music today, and previous winning bands in this competition include the Guildhall Jazz Band, Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra and the current winners - the Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra; plus soloists Tommy Smith, Mark Nightingaloe, arranger Tony Faulkner and composer Scott Stroman. The 2004 winners included the Fat Chops Big Band, Strathclyde Jazz Orchestra, Damian Cook and Kevin Wedrychowski.
