RADIO 2 NAMED BEST UK STATION

Steve Wright and Alice Cooper
BBC Radio 2 has collected 3 Gold Awards from this year's Sonys!

BBC Radio 2 has been named UK station of the year at the annual Sony radio awards ceremony in London.

The Sony's are considered the radio industry equivalent of the Oscars.

The other highlights of the night for Radio 2 included a lifetime achievement award to Steve Wright, and the award of speech broadcaster of the year going to Jeremy Vine.

Radio 2's success comes after industry figures last week showed the station is the most popular in the country, with 13.3 million listeners and a 16.5% audience share.

The station's controller, Lesley Douglas, said: "I really, really didn't think Radio 2 would have won this. It certainly has very little to do with me, but has an awful lot to do with the presenters."
