Lapoff at Maida Vale

Huw vs Rob!

This week we have 6 of the UK's best Laptop artistes playing live at Maida Vale.

Brave Captain, Stabmaster Vinyl, Gasman, Germlin, Ladyscraper, and Kyler (aka Shitmat) all strutted their hardware at our BBC Maida Vale studios, bringing us the UK's first lapoff!

In the blue corner....Team Huw!

Brave Captain, Stabmaster Vinyl and Lady scraper

Repping Huw's end tonight is Cardiff 's Brave Captain, the solo project of Martin Carr. He's is playing with Mothboy aka Simon Smerdon. They are both playing a version of the same song. Random fact, Martin Carr was also in the Boo Radleys, remember them?

Peace loving Stabmaster Vinyl, aka Welshman Geraint Ffrancon, brings us homegrown electronic releases on machine records. He feels he belongs on Ras's team for the Lapoff, we didn't have the heart to tell him it was a Rob and Huw thing.

As well as running High Quality Recordings, he is also behind the new Trosi fanzine, which aims at putting the Welsh electronic scene on the map. And most importantly he was voted into our Festive 50 last year, look out for this boy, he's a strong member of the Huw team!

Lady scraper is another fine contender representing Huw's Lapoff team. He is on the Monsters of Cock tour with DJ Floorfiller and Mully from May 18th, dates are on their webpages.

In the red corner....Team Rob!

Gasman, Germlin and Kyler

The Gasman aka Christopher Adam Reeves is a Portsmouth boy, repping for the Rob and the South coast! He calls himself an 'audio comfort blanket.'  Comforting the ears in a way that only hardware based sound can.

He works from old reel-to-reel recordings, cuts up tape, mixes it up and randomly sticks it back together.  He believes what makes a good piece of electronic music is when the music sounds like it had made itself. A strong contender for the Rob team.

Germlin aka Joe Howe is on Addatt records. His music has been described as 'like inheriting someone else's Attention Deficit Disorder then playing musical Tetris on level 500.'  This sums up Germlin's performance too, check the gallery for his beaming smile!  He holds strong promise for the fate of the Rob team. Glasgow should be proud of this bleepin' lap talent.

Kyler aka Shitmat aka Henry Collins is another of the Planet Mu crew. Mr-looped-samples and 80s-pop-breakcore-remixes was abandonded for his lapoff set. Choosing instead to use a 'laptop shaped guitar.' We kid you not, the king of laptops abandonded his instrument in the final round.  Should he be disqualified? Mr Collins, we're sending you to Mr da Bank for crimes against laptops...
