Print this articlePrint version 1/12 NextNext
01 Introduction
Here's some of the skills you'll need to work in PR/Promotion...

Sales Skills
To sell your artists and their products to the media and the public.

Good Telephone Technique
To represent your artist and the interests of your company with as much impact as possible over the phone.

Market Knowledge
To identify where your artists fits into the market place - who is most likely to buy their records and which press and media will give them the most effective exposure?

People Skills
To build a good rapport with your artists, make strong contacts in the media and to get key individuals giving your artists maximum support

Computer Skills
You'll be writing press releases, running mailing lists and using the internet for research. Fixing press and media events involves countless e-mails too.

Writing Skills
To put together great copy about your artists and to correspond clearly, but with style, with your contacts in the media

Planning & Organisation
To plan and run several effective PR campaigns at any one time smoothly, meeting deadlines and ensuring artists are in the right place at the right time.

Presentation Skills
To communicate the promotional strategy for your artists to record company execs, management and the artists themselves.

Resilience
To keep pushing your artists, however saleable they are, and however little feedback you get from the media at first.

Attention To Detail
To ensure the needs of artists, contacts and media outlets are met in full despite often frantic promotional schedules.
