Their second single was produced by Jack White. The White Stripes frontman also engineered their debut album, which featured Meg White on percussion duties. Patronage doesn't come much better than that. Who the hell then, are the Soledad Brothers?
Formed in Detroit in 1998 with a passion for blues rock, The Soledad Brothers are guitarist vocalist Johnny Wirick (aka Johnny Walker) and drummer Ben Smith (aka Ben Swank).
They originally met in 1994 when they played together in blues group Henry and June and, following a hiatus, re-ignited their musical partnership four years later when Wirick needed a drummer for a show. What was supposed to be just a one-off gig turned into a new band and the Soledad Brothers was born.
The band unleashed the first single in 1998 on Italy Records, entitled Sugar and Spice. They were signed to Estrus a year later for whom they recorded another 7" ('The Gospel According to John') and their debut self-titled album.
Second album 'Steal Your Soul and Dare Your Spirit to Move' led to the addition of a new band member, Oliver Henry on electric piano and saxophone and also featured Delta Blues player Dooley Wilson. Oh, and Jack White popped up again on production duties!
Their third album 'Voice of Treason' came out in 2003 on Loog Records. The 'Brothers are set to release their fourth album later this year on the same label.
