Antony &the Johnsons

Antony & The Johnsons in session for Huw Stephens

Born in Chichester and raised in California, Antony's desire to become a singer began with Boy George. Little did he know that twenty-two years later he would be sat at a piano recording a song with his hero. That song, 'You Are My Sister' features on Antony's acclaimed second album 'I Am A Bird Now.'

Released in March this year, the Mercury-Prize nominated album features contributions from Rufus Wainwright, Devendra Banhardt and another of Antony's heroes, Lou Reed. It's been hailed as 'one of the records of the year' - and Huw just can't get enough of it!

Says Huw: "It doesn't happen very often, but my girlfriend told me to listen to a CD, and it was the Anthony and the Johnsons album, I Am A Bird Now, on the Rough Trade label. She loved it, and after listening to it late at night having ignored it for a week, I did too. His voice is incredible; the whole mood of the album is unique and incredibly touching. There's pomp, heartbreak, hard times and pure joy."

"Hope There's Someone', the first single from the album, was one of the best songs I'd heard in about a year. We went to see him at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and missed the train back to Cardiff! If you can go and see Anthony and the Johnsons live, it's highly recommended! I'm chuffed to bits they're in session for us tonight!"

Now based in New York, Antony and the Johnsons released one album prior to I Am A Bird Now, a self-titled record on the Secretly Canadian label. He describes 'I Am A Bird Now' as a more intimate and personal album. "I tried to bring everything, how it was recorded, how it was performed extremely close, so it felt seductive like it was right in your ear."

Antony & the Johnsons' new single 'For Today I Am A Boy' will be released in September. Antony will be return to the UK in November for a full length tour, including an appearance at All Tomorrows Parties in December.
