01 Introduction
Whether you're starting out as an artist or quite a long way down the line, it's often hard to figure out your next step on the path to getting signed.

We've interviewed a lot of people for this site, and the thing we've found from talking to them all is that there aren't really any shortcuts and there's no guaranteed route to success.

Ask any 10 successful artists how they got to be where they are and they'll all have a different story. But there are some general rules which can save you a lot of time and effort.

That's what this section's all about.

"There are no rules to getting into the music industry. Most bands go into it and they don't know anything - we didn't know anything. We're all encouraged to think that mistakes are bad - 'don't make mistakes! Mistakes are bad!' That's absolute crap. Mistakes are how you learn. Do as much as you can.

"It's like some people have a map and they travel around going 'Well if we go up this street and turn left and we'll get there'. If you don't have a map then you'll come across things and do things that you wouldn't have done if you had the map. If you have the map then everyone goes that same way, so you just get lost in the crowd."
