Hip hop done the Welsh language way
 |
There's more to Welsh hip hop than Goldie Lookin' Chain - and Huw knows it. That's why this week we have Steffan Cravos aka MC Sleifar in session at Maida Vale. Staying true to his native language, Cardiff-based Sleifer and his gang of seven MCs and one DJ - some of whom he's meeting for the first time - rap entirely in Welsh!

"It's the first time we've all been in the same room together..." |
What's the score, Sleifar?
"I've been rapping for over ten years. The biggest project I was involved in was Tystion, which split in 2002. Then I worked on a project with Lo-Cut (Curig Huws) and put out on an album last year on Boobytrap Records. For this project, I've brought a load of people with me down to Maida Vale. It's the first time we've all been in the same room together and I haven't even met some of them before. They come from all over Wales and are aged between 14 to 40 something - so it's an interesting cross section!"
|
Why is it so important to you to rap in Welsh?
"All the songs we do are in Welsh. I've done stuff in English and French but I think and write in Welsh! We sing about what, where and who we represent. One of the songs we're doing for the session is the rather rude MOMYFG - which translates as "Lets get the **** out of here!" It was originally recorded by Tystion, so we're doing a remixed version."
