Post-rock sensibilities from Somerset
 |
Hailing from Somerset, Reigns consists of brothers Roo and Tim Farthing. Musically their ambition is to 'communicate something of a bewilderment at life in general' through exquisite experimental structures. However, when it comes down to songwriting Tim admits that the simple verse-chorus structure isn't neccesarily a bad thing...

"Sometimes we'll decide to write a life-affirming song about Satanism..." |
How do you approach writing songs?
Tim: "The starting points are variable - it could be a piano part, the rhythm of a windscreen wiper, the sound of a snail shell being crushed underfoot. Sometimes we'll simply decide to write a life-affirming song about Satanism. There is no definitive technique." |
What's your take on the verse-chorus structure?
"We're still battling with this one. Sometimes using that structure seems infuriatingly predictable, sometimes not using it seems unnecessarily complicated. We've taken to blurring the separations. Our songs will quite often only consist of 2 or 3 parts for each instrument. As long as you're not contributing to mediocrity it doesn't really matter where you stick your middle 8."
