How they cleared a sample

When it comes to clearing samples, there's one guy to call - Dennis Collopy.  Dennis runs Menace Music Management, and has been involved in clearing samples pretty much since samplers were invented. When Panjabi MC found himself in a bit of a clearance corner when his underground hit 'Mundian To Bach Ke' went mainstream, Dennis stepped in to sort out the mess.

"...you're not just sampling Busta Rhymes you're sampling a record where he sampled someone else."
How did you get involved in the Panjabi MC project?
"I'm mainly a manager [his roster includes All Seeing I and Mojave 3]. I've had to clear samples for a lot of my acts and developed a bit of a reputation for clearing things reasonably successfully. I was asked by someone who said "can you do me a favour?" That was September 2002 and it took three months to bring things to a conclusion."

The sample was the theme from a TV show called Knight Rider wasn't it?
"In fact it was Busta Rhymes sampling the Knight Rider theme. So it's really difficult because you're not just sampling from Busta Rhymes, you're sampling from a record where he's sampled somebody else. We listened to both the original theme and Busta's sample and we really couldn't discern any difference, but the record had already been out for several years and it was common knowledge that it had initially sampled Busta Rhymes."
