New York singer Laura Cantrell talks about her approach to song writing
 |
New York based singer songwriter Laura Cantrell is a firm favourite with the OneMusic with Rob da Bank listeners. Whilst pledging allegance to good ol' country music she also manages to bring a new element of style to both her own music and the fantastic selection of covers she performs both by well known writers and writers unheard of outside of New York. In her first interview with OneMusic, Laura tells us about her approach to songwriting and where her inspiration comes from.

"...go and learn a great song and see if there's some way that you can make it your own." |
How do you decide which covers to do?
"Well I've really learned songs that I liked to sing, especially when I didn't have many songs of my own. I've always been working hard as a writer but I haven't always been confident. I found that sometimes the best thing to do when you run out of juice as a writer is to go and learn a great song and see if there's some way that you can make it your own. It's a great exercise - just trying out your point of view on something and I think it goes back, indirectly, into the creative process of writing my own songs."
|
What songs have you picked out like that recently?
"We've done tracks recently by Lucinda Williams, several local writers in New York that aren't well known outside. Jennifer Jackson who has played in the UK some and Emily Spray who's also a New York writer. I like the old country songs too, I did a Wen Stuart song, an early sixties shuffle tune."
