Huw interviews Mercury Award winning Antony & the Johnsons
Globe-trotter Huw travelled to Brussels to meet Antony Hegarty, frontman in 2005's Mercury Prize winners Antony and the Johnsons.
Huw: Has 2005 gone quite fast for you because it's been a busy year? Antony: 'It's been a little crazy. I wouldn't have minded spreading it out over two or three years, y'know.'
'I really think of those people as my teachers... they've been through a lot, they're really wise people.'
You're currently on a massive tour. Is there one gig that has stood out?
'The one I always think about is the one in Belfast. It wasn't even such a spectacular venue, it was just such a spirited event and people were so ballistic and so fun. Quite irreverant and quite fun. Then on the other end of the spectrum, we did this show at Carnegie Hall that was sort of like the Bethlehem for a certain kind of musician. Sort of the final place you'd want to do a show. It was a little overwhelming.'
What's it like having played with Lou Reed, looking up to Boy George and Marc Almond, and have them now championing you?
'It's exhilirating. It feels a little bit mythical, especially when you develop a relationship with one of those icons as a child, and then as an adult to actually get to know them and to make friends with them... it's amazing. I really think of those people as my teachers too, they've been through a lot, they're really wise people.'
