Urban: Akira The Don
Print versionPrint version 1/4 NextNext
Akira The Don Updated: 3/11/04
The Welsh rapper waxes lyrical on the UK music scene and why GLC are a good thing for hip hop

Akira the Don looks like a man who worships at the altar of heavy metal. But appearances can be deceptive, and despite the beard, unruly barnet and eyebrow piercing combination that screams 'ROCK!', The 'Don is a purveyor of twisted, mashed up hip hop. He talks to OneMusic about being the rap Morrissey, why Goldie Lookin' Chain are good for UK hip hop, and why Fruity Loops is the best thing, like, ever.

"There's an incredible revolution going on and it's nothing to do with bands pretending it's 1976..."

What's your view on the current state of UK music?
"There is an incredible revolution going on and it has nothing to do with guitar bands pretending it's 1976, it has to do with normal kids making noises. Dizzee Rascal produced most of his own stuff. His first album was experimental and it was just done on Fruity Loops in the back of his mam's house. I see all these bands saving all their money to record demos they just sound like everyone else... if you do your own stuff in your house you can make it sound like you."

Do you record everything at home?
"Yes. I have a PC and a mini keyboard, Fruity Loops and Sound Forge. Fruity Loops is the most revolutionary thing since the Woolworths £20 guitar. Whereas once you had the idea of punk and be able to pick up a random instrument and be able to batter it about and make a tune and not have to be trained, now you can download Fruity Loops and instantly make tunes. It's as good as Cubase or Logic. Everyone should download Fruity Loops and spend a week making some wicked tunes."
