The last ever edition of Smash Hits was published in February this year.  It's just the latest music magazine consigned to the pop culture dustbin alongside The Face, Sleaze Nation, Muzik, Select and Jockey Slut.

Where will the gonzo writers and hip young gunslingers of tomorrow learn their trade?  Does this mean we're doomed to a future of MySpace critics and hit 'n' miss Blog Lit?

NME writer Imran Ahmed goes in search of the music writers of the future, and finds out along the way whether his own chosen career of music journalism is heading for the dumper.

Interviewees: Miranda Sawyer, Mark Frith from Heat, Rik from the band Captain, Jack White, managing editor of Pitchforkmedia.com, and some of the hottest music bloggers around, based in New York.

Who do you trust more: Professional music writers or bloggers?

alex D
Being a blogger myself (I'm tempted to plug but thats just sad) I am biased. But im all to aware of record companies finding ways to push bands through the media other than using advertising, and media i used to read can be more than replaced by a mix of blogs.

skeptic
dont believe the beard, west end trendies writing about garbage no one cares about

lucie b
the thing with bloggers is who cares? i don't know who they are so why should i believe them. at least professionals have probably been to a lot of gigs and know what they're talking about

rob
bloggers totally - they're not being paid by record companies to fly round the world with a band etc. so you'll probably get a more honest review i reckon
