What Carl Barat did next.

Two years ago, a band called The Libertines were riding high.  Then the story of the group became the story of the drug-addicted Pete Doherty, and the band spiralled into a tabloid frenzy of failed rehabs and court appearances, eventually splitting up.

While the circus surrounding Pete continues, his co-frontman Carl Barat disappeared from the limelight, lay low for a while, and formed a new band, Dirty Pretty Things.

With unrivalled access to the group, this documentary follows the first six months of Carl's new band; from their first secret European gigs, via writing in a Cornish cottage to LA recording studios, to the launch of their eagerly awaited new material.

Presented by Steve Lamacq, this programme features exclusive behind-the-scenes access and interviews with Carl Barat, Didz Hammond, Anthony Rossomando and Gary Powell.

It also features clips from early versions of as-yet-unreleased tracks from the band.

Can Carl Barat make it on his own?

Sam
Dirty pretty things are a tremendous band, of course there never going to be the libertines, the latter were a one off, one of those bands that inspire a million copycats that cant recapture there brilliance, don't compare the two,its unfair, but embrace the dirty's as an energetic new band with loads of potential, you may aswell admit you fu***ng love it!!

dave
yeah, carl is amazing and while pete has a few good songs in the babyshambles, barat is consistantly great. Also barat has a good voice

???
DPT are everythin the libertines werent.........rubbish!!!lol they have musical talent but their only die-hard fans will be Libertines fanatics, an they really need some of Doherty's lyrics 'cause theirs are pants!!!!

xox-carla-xox
yep definately so dpt are way beta than the babyshambles and i cant wait to buy their new album waterloo to anywhere

Becky
Pete is just a drug addict and I never believe he will change. He broke his friendship with Carl and has been on the news many times for injecting a young girl. Disgraceful. The Dirty Pretty Things album is great though. I got to be in the music Video for Deadwood! I met loads of people!

mari
Well I think like Billy. This is a really great band!! Hello from Spain!

Rosie
Of course he can! he is hugly talanted and Dirty Pretty Things are amazing! (but not quite as good as the libertines):D

Laura X
I adored the Libertines and was heartbroken when they split up. The Libertines is one of my fav' albums of all time. I wish people would stop having a go at Pete, it's not as if he's the first rock star to take a few to many drugs and I'm sure he wont be the last. DPT's album is great but I'm really hoping the Libs will reform. I've just heard that Pete's checked himself back in to rehab and is gonna have an opium suppressor fitted. If it's true then good luck to him, I hope he can sort himself out and reform the Libs.

Efa
Carl Barhat's band Dirty Pretty Things are amazing, there album is great, and so is the Babyshambles album, but Pete and Carl belong together, neither one of there bands will ever be as good as The Libs..get off the drugs pete and get The Libs back together :D

waz
carl is finally getting on with making music and making his mark, pete was just a hinderance

susie
without a doubt. intellegent and wise.

lilah
He sems to be doing pretty well, but mate...can you actually imagine what a libertines reuniun would be like, I mean they would be the greatest band in the world if they once again joined forces now. Damnit carlos, Peter needs you, he needs you bad

adam head
carl is a music legened dirty pretty things are rad they have taht Libertines feel that the babyshambles couldnt do as well.

Laura
Seeing Dirty Pretty Things......best night of my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mrs Barat
Dirty Pretty Things? i love them ! and i have so much respect for Carl , he appears so loyal and even though you know the whole episode with The Libertines has been a crushingly huge effect on him he doesn't feel the need to stir trouble and talk about it in a degrogatory way ,DPT are here to stay we will see to that keep it up Carl . we love you

simon L
carl will no doubt make it on his own. Hes amazing and his music is quality. And his gig at the astoria was the best night ive ever had. A fan forever!! and pete is quality just needs to sort himself out

dornan
carl is good and this album is almost as good as babyshambles but theese two morons need to sort out their differences and get the best band of our generation back. pete is a poet and carl write great rock songs together they are legendry alone they are just both okay

Robert
yes,of course!DTP are the best !! but you know,Carl,Pete loves you. please forgive Pete, and please reunion again.

i love indie
Although i think dpt have a great future ahead of them musically,it would be a shame for pete and carl's strong friendship to die so suddenly ,they always came across as a very strong partner ship and i think it would be tragic to let that die-i love you pete and carl!

josiex
As a massive fan of the libertines i wasn't sure what to expect from eithier pete or carl afta the split but i ave 2 say that the dpt, although not as energetic as the libertines (not that any otha band could be) make gr8 listening and i'm loving thier album waterloo to anywhere,so yeh i think the future defienetly looks promising for carlos barat, and wish him da best of look x

bx
Definately, he is a genius and a legend in the making! i love Dirty Pretty Things they are the best thing to happen to the bristish music scene and i wish them the best of luck and il support them all the way!

Holly
Most definitely. He is a legend in his own right, but with Pete they were an awesome duo. Hope they'll play again some day, but DPT are fantastic, just bought the album which is top class. Keep it up lads xxx

Meg
Yeah!!! He already has made it on his own with a record much more reputable than "Down in Albion" and it is now apparent who the real talent behind the libertines was.. "Waterloo to Anywhere" is like the libertines third album. They have catchy and interesting tunes and are even better live.

JENKO
Excellent performance at 1 big weekend (PRESS RED ON YER CABLE TO SEE EM) and cant wait for Sunday 27th August at LEEDS to see em fer real! Bang Bang knock out!

HelenFrancesca
DPT wouldnt be the band they are today without carl and gary having been in the Libertines, we have to let the Libertines lie and remember them for what they were at their peak and not be bitter about the end - all great things must come to and end. But honestly, look at it this way - DPT are completely bodacious(?) and this is just the start of what could be better than the Libs, and more amazing hair-sticking-up-on-the-back-of-your-neck music sail on the good ship albion and let the good times roll. All Hail The Triumphant Glorious Talented Beauty that is King Carlos!!! Love and Peace xxxxxxxxxx

A French girl
Dirty pretty Things is maybe the great band of the year. Long Life, DPT.

rossy boy
dpt are just brilliant far better than babyshambles

jenni
i think they will do ok i really like babyshambles and i hope dpt are as good looking forward to hearing more stuff

kiwifanatic
I don't know much abot dirty pretty things because I haven't heard much of them. Is there any websites where I can listen to them?

travis
ye i think he'll definitely make it on his own. but i'd love to see him and pete play together again someday.

taylor
yeah i think he can! it would be a lot better if pete was there by his side...but awell. shambles are awesome 2!! wish pete could just come to his senses!! wish the libertines were still on the go!!

WAYNE
DEFINITELY HE IS BRILLIANT, PETE GAVE LIBS A BIT OF AN EDGE BUT D.P.T HAVE A STRONG SINGER AND A GOOD BAND. CARL SUNG A LOT OF THE LIBS SONGS ANYWAY AND, HE SUNG ALL OF THEM ON HIS OWN AT THE END WHEN PETE WASN'T TURNING UP FOR GIGS. FUNNY HOW HE DOESN'T TURN UP FOR NEARLY ANY BABYSHAMBLES GIGS NOW. IS HE STILL IN JAIL OR DID HE GET BAIL?

fitz
well he obviously can! once you see dirty pretty things you can see how much better carl is in this band and he is on top form! where has babyshambles gone now? not far mate! dirty pretty things are gonna be huge!

Emily
Just got my hands on a copy of the DPT DVD - and it's clear that there's still the passion between band mates even when not on stage. After sacrificing a cold que-up in the snow at Norwich a few weeks back, I think it's safe to say that they have firmly put themselves in the 'legendary' band category - with or without the past. They are by rights a brilliant brilliant band and would have worked up a great name for themselves even if they started at the bottom.

Lora
DPT are amazing from what I've heard. Loving Babyshambles too but DPT are sounding alot better :] Still a huge libertines fan though

Julia
I saw Dirty Pretty Things last week and i just saw the Babyshambles last night. DPT was GREAT! It was an awesome first DPT concert and not the last. They proved they were a good and solid band, with Carl as the front man (it could have never been bad) As for the Babyshambles, Pete was 2 hours late for the show!!!! (he got held up at the airport) Anyway... the show was AMAZING! really i mean AMAZING. So breath taking, ya kno? i love both Babyshambles and DPT, but god i would give up both bands to have the Libertines back. :-(

gemma
yeah, but pete's the man

Matt
The libertines were amazing...but lets face it, no one can see doherty repeatin that with babyshambles, especially given his current state. Dirty Pretty Things are awesome, and whilst Doherty has descended into a tabloid joke, Carl has waited and is sure to produce great music for years to come

oscar
doherty is a legend and wil go far soo will barrat there both good, apart from all of DPT's stuff sounds quite similar!

Sia
Well, the DPT are good and i think carl can make it quite well on his own. However, i'm a huge shambles fan and i believe in pete's talent.Carl rocks! But there will be nothing like the libertines again no matter how hard they both try.I love them both....

Hezza7
I am a massive fan of both Peter and Carl, mainly preferring the former. Having seen both bands live recently i honestly have to say that DPT's totally eclipse Babyshambles in terms of talent and look a potentially awesome band. Long live the Albion Army!

barry
the libertines will live on for ever, but long live DPT and carl!

dayyyve
pete, pete, pete!!! its good but lets be honest its not pete and its not going to be anything near or anywhere equal or better than the libs. sorry i wish it could be work out different but it wont.

Scott D
Definitely! Saw them in Norwich and they looked like a proper band! Have seen Babyshambles also and, as big a fan I am of Pete's material, DPT's music seems more advanced, they turned up on time and Carl look relatively sober! Babyshambles were good but, in my opinion, Dirty Pretty Things are better.

Simon
Of course he'll make it on his own, and please no comparisons with Doherty's efforts. Down in Albion is one of the most pointless and forgetable albums i've ever listened to. Good luck Carl, give us back something decent to listen to.

Richie37
From what I've heard DPT certainly have the potential to turn a few heads. Hope they do and I will be buying the album if France and Bang Bang are anything to go off !

Ben Millar
Carl, Gary, Didz, Anthony and Dirty Pretty Things are amazing, goin to see them at the Barras in May. can't wait, the songs sound amazing. there a proper band who write amazing songs and enjoy what their doin. Roll on May! Waterloo to Anywhere...

steven
honestly i don't think he'll find chemistry like he did with peter, theyre one of a kind. they won't shake things up like the Libs did.

Dan the Man
Close call i absolutly love the shambles seen them 3 times but from what i've heard of DPT so far, I'm well lookin forward to seein them at the astoria. Libertine forever.

Biggles
Saw the boys at manchester! There's an awesome album coming!

andrew manson
what a legend carl is, has recorded great singles got a new band together from the burning ashes of the libertines. from what i have heard from friends who saw them it was great and they felt they could go far. as for pete doherty im a fan but i fear it could be the end of an era. But theres great prospects for both bands, thank god carl back

TOM P
of course. from what i've heard theres more of the libs spirit in dpt than babyshambles. doherty is a poet but he's throwing it all away an babyshambles need to rehearse an become tight as a band before they can be revered the way dpt surely will be. bang bang pete's dead....for now

newt
That boys ard as nails! He'll make it by crikers, you mark my words marky mark market boy!

the B Man
It is not acceptable to say that the libs were a one horse show and although pete is a legend i know carlos rocks! Keep on layin down those super quick licks carlos

Phil
Yeah! DPT are Quality :]

louise
i think dpt are great, but im afraid im a bigger pete fan...babyshambles are my favourite xxx

sean sheehy
yes of course he can. just look at the difference in the two of them now pete is in heat magazine on his relationships and carl is in the nme mags and doing what he is good at. bang bang your dead is the best song so far this year and carl is one of the best performers we have at the moment.

shambles
no chance. up the shambles

Nat
Carl is absolutely fantastic, he's an amazing songwriter, electric live, and he's pulled together a brilliant band. And as for your badly worded question, yes he could definately make it on his own. but he's not going to. He's going to make it with Dirty Pretty Things. Please forget Pete (not that I dont love him too, but he's seperate now really.) Carl Didz Anthony and Gary, they're the new boys in the band, and they rock. Thankyou for this documentry its absolutely fantastic.

wa5ter
hell ya! i saw the libs without pete and they were class! best show ever!

jon
carl with never be as good as pete,,, i feel carl shud just give up now because he will always be shadowed by pete

troy
well done carl .. . DPT are sounding great and i cant wait to see you in bristol i have tickets and will be great.i have seen babyshambles and they are great and i think people should stop trying to compare you you are both bohemiam poets but in two different ways, you and pete both work well seperatley but together when together you are great so keep goin carl and heres 2 a one day libertines reunion

WHO
he might but we all know pete is the one.

Elisa&Saby
Anthony is the best!!

X
they can! Carl is just well, better than Pete. Great doc. Really, really great. ahhh....

Heather
Its clear that Carl Barat is going be around for a long time. DPT were one of the best live bands I have seen in a long time. Despite only hearing poor quality bootlegs the new music is thoroughly exciting and inspiring. A band to definitely watch. XxX h

Orange Peel
Yes probably he has the talent

Liz
Wonderful documentary. . . shows how far Carl's come since that terrible terrible time last year. Of course he can make it on his own, just needs the confidence to try and it seems like he's finally getting that back!

lisa
of course he can....and he's great..amazing!!Go Carl....

Loulou
I always thought Carl and Gary were the powerhouses behind the Libertines and DPT proves me right. I'm not interested in washy out-of-tune poetry from the Babyshambles, I want big loud sexy rock and roll and when I went to see DPT I got it in shedloads. Well done all four DPTs, you have a great future xx

ghost pig
Saw the band in Leeds, such a great gig, filled with the passion that the early Libertines were all about, possessing the zealous and excitement that being in a band should generate. Great songs and great times!

Ross from Kent
I burst into spontaneous applause after hearing this, despite being alone.

exlibertinefan
Definitely. I was sceptical until I saw them at Kings College. I was wrong. They have great energy, music and stage presense.

Rich
Carl was always the more noticeable one in the libertines. Babyshambles was a bit disappointing for me. But im loving the dirty pretty things vids that have been released!!

Martyn
I missed out on the libs, call me a late developer if you will. I was hoping 'shambles would recreate some of that amazing energy visible in numerous online videos, sadly I was disappointed. Although a few of 'shambles tracks were strong and have depth to them, they just didn't work live - not with Pete in the state I saw him anyway. Dirty Pretty Things on the other hand - may be lacking the emotional depth but for good clean rock n roll they kicked rear. One of the best acts i've seen in ages. Bring on the album, Carl et al are still at an embryonic stage, but it'll be a very talented baby, full of energy and promise. Let’s just hope it makes it to its teens (and a level of emotional realisation).

Ed Harris
Well from what i've heard Dirty Pretty Things are incredible The legacy lives on of the Libertines.

Jenny
New stuff sounding class from Carl, seeing them in may at Barrows cant wait. Gonna be big i think

lisa
eh-of course he can-everyone knows he was the real talent in the libertines. bit worried about the addition of didz tho, was always a bit of a posing fairy in the ctc's, i guess only time will tell!

Scott
bang bang is a tune deadwood is magic too! cant wait to hear some more from them

Tony
Dirty Pretty Things rock seen them at the ABC in glasgow thought the show was amazin

Rosie
Yes of course! Having seen DPT's in Oxford and Babyshambles in Bristol (eventually), DPT's were sooooo much better! Unfair to compare them though, let Carl et al just get on with their stuff and leave to Pete to carry on with his and continue to let his fans down with his unreliability - then the best man will surely show!

ace
yes of course the songs i have heard from them are great i thought the babyshambles album was a disappointment im sure dpt album will be great

jon adams
We went to see Pretty Things in sheffield friday night, best night ive had for ages. You know when the albums gonna be good when you hear songs for the first time live and they sound tip top. Ended up back stage with 2 mates, Carl and Anthony, best night of my life, seriously, Libertines changed my life, that night will be remembered forever (i called carl chubby!!! sorry man) Great lads x x

strokey
of course! but why Peter and Carlos were boyfriend and boyfriend..double the heartbrake really. Yes Dirty Pretty Things are fine specimans, great music.

Gem_Gems81
Yeah, forsure. Your always gonna be a bit gutted at first you just gotta pick yourself up, dust yourself down and get on with it. There's nothing better than being on the re-bound!

Amy
In this break up, its clear Carl can do sooo much better off. You go guurl!...i mean...Carl.

paul
pete doherty is a better person than carl. he kicked pete out the band. dpt are a good outfit but they have no meaning and speak out to no one. pete came back straight away and although he hasnt always been the best person in the world he is kind loving and sensitive. carl is the true waster...but what did expect from the bbc well done on licking some 'musical' crack suppassed yourself truely congratulations

anon
yes it can be and il tell u why. aftre a split u often go out looking for others on the rebound. thers no real love or affection involved just a blind ambition. we look to new others to obtain something the old chapter never allowed us. this i feel can be applied to the band qustion an that, ya no. peace out.

Dan
Saw them at Kings College the other day and they were excellent! The best new band I've seen for a long while.

Libertine
Its a very messed up and emotional thing to happen, its all up to you how you deal with it... and of course what happend to you during the break up, like a girlfriend, you either try to replace that chemistry and love with drugs. Or you take a step back, think and then make a come back, and do damm good, pete and carl are both legends, let just see what happens...

Adam
stunning documentary as always. Carl and DPT sound fantastic but he is an equally good but vey different artiste to peter so comparisons shouldn't be made. Libertines was a combination of them both and was faantastic cos of it. Their work as individuals can only be exciting for libertine fans. Gotta love Gary...........

taylor
i bet pete fairly piles on the pounds when he gives up the smack! on yersel carl!

indie_chic
yeah totally losing the libertines was like losing a boyfriend rock on pete doherty!

adam
yes

cecil
yes i know the feelin when i broke up with my boyfriend

silver bullet
yes, if you have become emotionally attached to band - possibly because you go out of your way to see them or really feel what their music stands for - then it can be a tremendous blow. Although it came as no surprise when the libertines broke up, this is how i felt x

Milou
Of course!

chris
i saw them at the birmingham gig, carl has both the songwriting and guitar skills to pull it off. he is also supported by a talented, tight sounding band.

doesn't matter
Yes.

ze bitch.
YES. but he needs peter to love him, damn it.

Chris
There will be endless comparisons between the Dirty Pretty Things and Pete's Babyshambles, on the first few impressions of a couple of songs on the website and what they have played at live shows Dirty Pretty Things are a hell of a lot better the Babyshambles. Everything that was good about The Libertines is in the Dirty Pretty Things, Carl has come back after 18 months and musically kicks Petes arse, but he probably won't have as much media coverage.

Zenobia
Going on their Glasgow ABC gig, then hell yes. Strong tunes, danceable, fast guitar lovers paradise. Deadwood is a fine fable and gin and milk well crafted challenges. The band played so tight and powerhouse drums. New life new found land, anyone creative has the right to express that and ultimately only does create alone, even with the libertines they were individuals with distinct influences. The media circus is a distraction from the songs and the music, dirty pretty things already have made it, an albumn, we just have to hear it.

Billy
Definitely!!!Carl and DPT are the best!
