Radio 1's Edith Bowman presents the definitive story of one of the most important and influential British artists of the past 20 years, Ian Brown.

This year Ian Brown is receiving NME's Godlike Genius Award but  when the Stone Roses first burst on to the scene in 1987 little was expected of  them.

Their debut album laid the foundations for the future of British music, but it was Ian who made the blueprint for a generation of swaggering, cocksure Britpoppers.

The break up of the band in 1996 should have also marked the end for the frontman but the following public fued with former band mate, John Squire, a spell in Strangeways prison and onstage fights at his own gigs, only seemed to further cement King Monkey's legendary status.
Ten years on since the demise of the 'Roses, and he's still going strong with a string of Top 40 hit singles and four crticially acclaimed albums under his belt.

Featuring an interview with Ian Brown and contributions from the Arctic Monkeys, Noel Gallagher and James Lavelle the documentary takes a look at why he is as relevant as ever.

After Unfinished Monkey Business, Golden Greats, Music Of The Spheres & Solarized, we finally realise the creative genius behind the Stone Roses, what's Squire up to these days, eh ? F.E.A.R. could quite possibly be one of the greatest songs ever recorded.

pk
The Stone Roses - LEGENDS

Chuckle chuckle
People are a bit funny. You may believe that someone else deserves the award instead, but dont diss the man Ian Brown.

The kell oh the kell
It´s got to be the king of Salford himself, MORRISEY, one of the greatist songwriters ever, there is a light that never goes out for e.g. Cmon people

TONY BOY

Ben
Had to be Dave Grohl, was in one of the greatest bands of all time, and is still creating class songs.

Mark
I'm in America and let me tell you, it wouldn't be Ian Brown, Artic Monkeys or artist who are "Flash in the pan". It would be Depeche Mode, The Cure or The Smiths. These bands have helped shape today's "World Music", not just Brit Pop!!!

Ian Brown
The man is a legend. Saw him for the first time solo in Sydney & then Melbourne. He was amazing, mesmerising & just plain awesome

tom
brown, brown, ashcroft, noel, liam, all god like genius what more can you say.

Reece
I hadn't honestly heard of Ian Brown until just before the 2006 NME awards but after seeing and hearing F.E.A.R it is obvious he is a genius. i think Noel should get it aswell because even if there would be no Oasis if there was no Roses Noel has stil proven he is the best songwriter ever!

matt
Half Man Half Biscuit, Nigel. The irony of it all would be bound to produce somekind of response

mully
IAN BROWN THE GREATEST

john roddy
The King Monkey got it cause he has changed British music and is still the best artist at the moment.Ian has played a lot of smaller venues so everyone can experience his music and showmanship. Nerve center in Derry was a unbelievable concert! Big up to the king!

I would give Shane Mcgowan the 'God Like Genius' award because he is a genius. No argument.

Jazz Thomas

To all the people who would have liked Noel or Oasis to win the God Like Genius Award - without Ian Brown and the Roses there would not have been an Oasis.

Noel Gallagher should have won the Godlike genius award. There will never be a band that will change the face of British music the way Oasis did in 94'.

NOEL GALLAGHER
SIMPLY THE GREATEST SONGWRITER OF OUR GENERATION

Ian Brown
Probably one of the most innovative and intelligent musicians of our generation, Brilliant live; keeps his cool even when spat on (Cardiff:November'05)! Can't wait for the next album!

amana
I wouldnt give him a award for such a blasphemous subject. I havent even heard of him since now! surely that means he isnt all that. If he's a good musician give him an award for being a good musician and not trying to compare him to God. its just wrong!

Janina
Ian Brown definitely without a doubt. Saw him in December at MEN with my 10 yr old sons - they are now life long fans. Big thanks to Ian and all the fans at the MEN for making it such a memorable night for them X

Merlin the Merlin
God-like genius certainly. Got me into one of his new producers called Darren Moss (Rams Red Son & Essen) who did love bug. Awesome music there too. Godlike certainly. Genius, well, it comes in all forms! :o)

Dalton
Got to go to Shaun Ryder, Ian Brown, Ian Curtis and John Lydon, without whom life would be s##t

Steve
Ian Brown is superb. Seen him at 2 gigs and the shows were tremendous. "Fear" is one of the best songs i've ever heard. However, i'm giving Godlike genius to Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode. If you've ever stood in the crowd when he's belting out "Personal Jesus", you"ll understand why! "Reach Out And Touch Faith!"

James Bird
He is a legend, have you seen his hair!

Ian Brown
Manchester god

Missfitt
He rocks... nuff said.

Adam
Ian Brown is the man!

Richard Ashcroft
Under-appreciated genius!

DECLAN HARLEY
Ian Brown, real crowd pleaser and with tunes like F.E.A.R., F***ING GENIUS! Long live the King!

Thom Yorke
No brainer. Because the year after the Stone Roses' Second Coming, The Bends arrived, and suddenly every band in the world had to come to terms with the fact that they could never make an album like Radiohead.

Dan
King Monkey, The Manchester Legend

Let me kiss you
Surely Morrissey should start winning awards of this nature, outstanding acheivement award at the brits next year???? Who else is there left??

IAN BROWN
IAN BROWN WELL DESERVES THE AWARD. NO ONE IS AS COOL AS THE MAN. THE ATTITUDE , THE SWAGGER ALL ADD UP TO A GOD LIKE GENIUS. KEEP UP THE BAPE FASHION IAN. APE SHALL NEVER KILL APE

Bids
got to be mr brown thanks for some of the best nights of my life

SPEAROS
IAN BROWN.I WOULD LOVE THE MAN TO RUN THE COUNTRY AND SORT OUT ALL THE MESS WE ARE IN BUT I F.E.A.R THAT WOULD PUT A STOP TO HIS MUSIC. KEEP DOING IT MR BROWN, YOU ARE A GODLIKE GENIUS AND JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE. THANKS FOR EVERYTHING.

beds
Ian Brown without doubt. Just for being the coolest man ever to set foot on the planet. Long may you reign King Monkey!

Caleb Smith
Primal Scream. They have made more important, and inventive records than any rock band in the last 20 years. To go from screamedelica, v.Point,XTRMNTR, to E.Heat is amazing.

Ian Brown
He's no monkey he is the organ grinder!

Steph
Met him twice backstage at his gigs in the last few months. He was incredible live, the Roses tunes nearly blew my head off. He was awesome to meet, so charming. Long live Mr Brown.

Burns
If you don't respect and love this man then you obviously haven't looked closely enough at what he does. Don't go to his gigs expecting to hear the greatest voice but he will blow you away through his presence if you let him. Ian Brown - I hope you live forever.

Tom Walker
I'd give it to the founders of Camra.

Colin McDonagh
I think its about time Ian Brown got proper recognition for his solo work.

Lea
Ian Brown defo!!!!!!!!! He is a legend! He's God !!!!!!!!

Anon.
I'm not religious - although I'm a Christian - but I believe referring to any musician as god-like, as highly, and extrmely blasphemous. A percentage of musicians are great at what they do, and provide us with some amazing music, but that is all they are - musicians - not god-like. It has something in common with the over-used application of the words 'Hero', 'Legend', 'Star', 'genius', etc. Unless we apply the right words and meanings to things, we'll all end up being heroes, legends, geniuses, stars, and god-like, etc - when clearly the vast majority of us are just average / mainstream. PS I'm not being miserable, I'm just pointing out' that we need to be careful, because the music, and the music industry will suffer in the long run.

Dennis
From the coolest band of all time, to a legendary solo artist, Ian Brown is one of the most inspiring men ever to walk the planet!

Rachael Pidge
IAN BROWN is Godlike Genius..."kiss me where the sun don't shine" if you think otherwise!

Craig Magic Dearing
The Lindengates 'cos they're great.

Chudley

jono
Deffo Ian Brown, cool monkey!

van the man

Ross
Ian Brown is the well worthy winner of this title. Just hope that one day it will happen and the Stone Roses get together for another album

Lee
Ian Brown and I quote "Not only is Ian Brown the greatest writer and singer of the 20th/21st" song writer, yes.... singer your having a laugh! Don't get me wrong he is a God like genius and one of the greatest front men ever but my god he can't sing live, and that just adds to his charm!!!

NOEL GALLAGHER
Do I really need to explain?

laura
The Gallagher brothers in the best band of all time!

squire/brown
4 givin me the Roses. jj

lee richardson
Ian Brown is top quality seen him live three times and he never fails to impress.Golden Greats is the best album he has done.

Scott Smith
Ian brown is one of the most influencial and most recognised artist of the 20th/21st century. His ability to stand the test of time and create music like "my star" and "dolphins were monkeys" in my mind makes him god like!!!

Damon Albarn
Damon Albarn: Transends styles, creates an amazing melody when he needs to...sings in key live, unlike Ian Brown

dunnyp6662
Ian Brown: Modern British music wouldn't be where it is today, Kaisers, Coldplay, Oasis, if it wasn't for the King Monkey so please all hail the prince of Manchester Mr Ian Brown.

Elliott
Graham Coxon because his music is so upbeat and different, you know he was the brains behind blur.....

Joe de Brass
Ian Brown - Unique, leading the way for tomorrows music and he's been doin it for years! (I had the honour of shaking his hand in the dance tent at V99)

chico from x factor

matt martin
ian brown needs singing lessons.. if you have seen him live you know what i mean.. cool bloke though

Ann Marie
Been to see Ian Brown twice. Travelled all the way from Dundee to Portsmouth to see him in November and went to see him last week at the Braehead arena. The man is pure class!! Would go to see him live every week if i could. Loved the Stone Roses and love Ian's solo stuff. He is the greatest......a real legend!!!!!!

TallSpoon
Looks like a mong, Couldnt carry a tune in a bucket, Sounds as thick as bottled pigshit (almost Ryan Giggslike you might say) The man is a God!!!

ME
Explanations are superfluous

mike
Ian Brown is class. We would be without the likes of Oasis without him and The Stone Roses

Tim
Not only is Ian Brown the greatest writer and singer of the 20th/21st century but his outlook on life from what he says in the interviews that he has given are spot on. I cannot think of a more fitting title for him than "Godlike Genius" I just wish he was Prime Minister.

Jack
seen him twice and well just wow!!! keep going Ian please never stop

A Fan
There should have been contributions from female fans. Its very male orientated. very shody.

Mark E. Smith (The Fall)
For creating music that still in 50 years time will be far ahead of anyone else.

Rekde
For a British artist in the last 20 years I would give my recommendation to Ian Brown without reservation. He has such a breadth of musical influences, and is able to punctuate his lyrics with substantial comments on the human pysche,he cannot fail to be recognised. If this award was to be bestowed to my most influential artist in American music then it would be Booty Collins. His approach to music with such passsion and progressive thinking, through the expression of Funk, is worthy in my mind of commendation.

The Greatest
Ian Brown becuase he is God

Em
Def Ian Brown. Saw him at Manchester Arena & he is a legend. Long reign King Monkey!

Ian Brown
I've seen him live twice and he is an absolute god!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Louise
