Reporter Profiles

Debbie Randle

Debbie Randle

Senior Broadcast Journalist

Where are you from?
I'm a Midlands girl....born in Coventry, raised in Nottingham.

What were you doing before Radio 1?
My last job was News Editor at Chiltern FM in Bedfordshire, before that I was the breakfast newsreader for Horizon Radio in Milton Keynes. My first ever job was working at a bingo club.

Best part of the job/ thing I am most proud of?
Being one of the first to find out what's going on - then letting everyone else know.

Worst on air moment?
There have been so many. The worst one I can remember is completely losing it when reading out a story about a local sex shop. I held it together until the bit about chocolate coated willies but that was it, I was laughing so much the presenter had to cut to the weather. Burping's also a bad one. I've had to stop drinking Dr Pepper before a news bulletin.

Three words that describe you:
Nosy, honest, loyal.

Advice to anyone who wants to get started in journalism:
It's all about work experience. Start as early as you can to show you're serious. When you're on a placement push people as much as you can to give you things to do. You won't learn much just making tea all week.

Where would you like to be in 10 years' time?
Doing up old houses and selling them for lots of money. Taking at least five holidays a year. Oh yeah...and working on the occasional documentary to keep me ticking over.

What's on your walls at home?
Nothing at the moment - I don't move in for another few weeks so they're not my walls yet.

Who would you most like to interview?
It would have been Prince William, but I think it's changed to Prince Harry. I reckon he'd have more to say.

If you could be famous, what would you be famous for?
I've always wanted to be a singer but my voice is pretty bad. I open my mouth but it never comes out right. Now I only sing when I'm on my own in my car.

My top three albums ever are:
That's a tough one, I change my mind all the time. Three of my best are:
TLC - Crazy Sexy Cool
Christina Aguilera - Stripped
The Fugees - The Score

Who's your favourite news reporter and why?
Jon Snow, he's so cool ... and you can't beat those ties.

How do you spend your time off?
Trying to catch up with friends who're scattered across the country.

If wasn't a news reporter I'd be...
Working in Top Shop. They get good discounts right..?
