Mike Davies was born in 1978 in Los Angeles, California where he lived until he was 19 years old.
Both of his parents are British, and he spent a lot of time in the UK whilst growing up, taking in the punk rock culture and developing a love for the music.
In 1998 Mike moved to Santa Barbara, California where he studied graphic design at the city college.
During his time there, he spent most nights seeing gigs and kicking around with the local bands.
His love for music turned into a passion, and he decided to give up art school and pursue a career in radio.
During the summer of 2001 Mike moved to London. He worked in a coffee shop on Oxford Street for six months and began temping as a runner at BBC Radio 1, a job which he took on full-time.
Working at the heart of Radio 1 production teams, Mike often helped out with shows and after working with Steve Lamacq and The Evening Session at The Deconstruction Tour, landed himself a full-time job.
Mike's knowledge of the LA punk scene and his enthusiasm for broadcasting impressed Steve and he was invited to join the team permanently.
After a year and a half working on The Evening Session, Mike had built up a reputation in the record industry and in radio as one of the leading taste makers in his field of music.
In January 2002 Radio 1 gave Mike a slot on the station to build his own show from scratch.
He created The Lock Up, a show which showcases and reflects his own musical tastes which are as diverse as punk rock, hip hop, ska, rockabilly, psycho-rockabilly, hardcore, dub, reggae and a few things you might not expect.
Over the time the show has been on air, he has recorded live tracks, interviews, co-hosts and features with the biggest names in punk rock and hip hop including: Bad Religion, AFI, Sick of it All, Dropkick Murphys, Hundred Reasons, Anti Flag, Dilated Peoples, Fugazi, Grandmaster Flash, Mad Caddies and many many more...
The first show (a co-host with godfathers of punk rock Bad Religion) was heralded by The Guardian as "the best show I've heard on the station".
The Lock Up was voted number one radio show of 2002 in Big Cheese magazine and was in the top five in Kerrang.
Mike has presented documentaries for Radio 1, including A Cut Above, about body modification, and Just Do It, focusing on the do-it-yourself ethic of the punk rock community.
In July 2004 Mike's show The Lock Up moved to a prime time slot on Radio 1, every Tuesday from 21.00 to 23.00.
As well as the show he also DJs around the country including: playing at the Deconstruction Festival at Finsbury Park; DJing and compeering the Concrete Jungle stage at Carling Reading and Leeds Festival; and resident DJing at his own Lock Up Club night and the XFire Nights among others.
