Radio 1's Love Weekend
Last Updated: 24 July 2001, 15.10
Well... They took away the Parade but they didn't take away the Love! Radio 1 descended upon Newcastle on Friday night and rocked the city right through to Sunday morning. With over 30 DJs spread over 7 venues, Radio 1 gave Newcastle the biggest party the city had ever witnessed. We danced by the Tyne, got messy at Sea, were sea sick on the Love Boat, then joined 8,000 Love Weekenders on the dancefloor at Telewest Arena for one of the finest DJ line-ups of the year.
The Essential Mix - Live
Radio 1 moved to the massive Telewest Arena and Foundation in the heart of Newcastle, and kept the party going through the night. Seb Fontaine, Pete Tong, Yousef, Layo, Darren Emerson, Sasha, Digweed and Danny Rampling kept the quality contol on high for a momentous evening of top music. Check out the pictures here

The best thing about Newcastle is...
We chatted to clubbers who had travelled from far and wide to be at the Love Weekend to find out what they thought was so special about Newcastle. Find out what they had to say
Judge Jules and Fergie at Tuxedo Princess
Like a boat on the river, it rocked! Rammed to the rafters and hotter than a hot thing on a very hot day, Jules had the sweaty crowd swinging from the mast of the Tuxedo Princess, only for Fergie to come on and really push them overboard!
Sara Cox Live from BBC Newcastle
Sara Cox kicked off Saturday's love in with a whole host of guests dropping in to chat and play some tunes. Scott & Scooby, Futureshock, Dave Pearce, Stanton Warriors, Dreem Teem, Danny Rampling and Sonique all managed to get out of bed after the Love Weekend opening party at Sea. Check out what went on during Sara's show
Pete Tong & Danny Rampling Live from Sea
The Radio 1 Love Weekend has officially started! Pete Tong and Danny Rampling kicked things off in style at Newcastle's trendy Sea club down on the Quayside. With hot mixes from Scott & Scooby and Tom Wainwright as well as a first time live PA from Mutiny UK. We were there and as well as webcasting the whole night we got some of the clubbers on camera. See the whole lot here...

The Love Weekend Interviews
"I did it once in the Grand Canyon with John Digweed." Confused? Find out what Sasha's on about by reading the transcript.
Seb Fontaine Q&A
Seb on what makes a good set: "Crowd reaction really. The way I like it is if you can have people going mad, as if they were listening to big records, but without playing big records. That is a huge success.
Pete Tong Q&A
"My first gig was in a village hall in Kent. Me and my friend inflicted ourselves on somebody's wedding. Not very glamorous, I can assure you!"
Pete answers your questions on Love Parade, Arsenal and Greek weddings!
"I don't look at being female. It's just me, and the kind of records I play. I've never experienced any sexism in the industry. I never notice things as I'm too busy working. You haven't got time to be worrying about these things. I stay very focused."
John Digweed Q&A
John Digweed on progressive dance: "The whole word progressive, the music I play, covers so many styles - deep house through to tribal. It all gets tagged under the same title, but it's a lot of different music. I try not to be pigeonholed.
Erick Morillo Q&A
On Monday Erick answered your questions in a live web chat. Erick on playing in front of big crowds..."Not so much an ego boost but a lot of energy. It's very euphoric. Sometimes when you're with the right crowd it's better than an orgasm!"
Andy Parfitt Q&A
"Obviously some people are angry. But that's not going to bring the Love Parade back. I think there's not much point in anger and we should just look forward to what we have at the weekend. I know it won't compensate but there should be a lot for everyone to enjoy."
