"It's nice to be playing a medium sized venue..."
...said Steve Malkmus,
"...not wanting to say small 'cos that sounds... you know..."
Malkmus fans are fervent if not to say fanatical, and the crush at the front was sufficient to worry Stephen Hawking... lest a singularity be formed into which the entire universe disappeared...
We got so carried away we got our very biggest 'One Live' slide out and projected it on the wall...
The Show?
Despite the magnificence of Calexico, this was the show the majority of people had obviously caome to see. They were rewarded with almost every track from the solo album (including the album's 'Japanese release only' bonus track trainspotters!). It was a confident and very relaxed Malkmus on show tonight. For the benefit of Mr Peel he dedicated a gorgeous cover of 'Tale in a Hard Time', written by veteran folk guitar hero Richard Thompson...

If you heard John Peel's show on the night, you'll have heard how John left the crowd cheering live on air for ages after Stephen left the stage... absolutely everybody wanted more, including Mr Malkmus, apparently. Due to a curfew at the venue, we had to finish at 11:00p.m. so an encore wasn't possible... the only bum note of a top night out...
