Name: Peel Weekend 2007
Venue: The Limelight
Town: San Antonio, TX
Line Up/Details:
Music For Listeners out of San Antonio, TX brings a second year of not one but TWO nights for Mr. Ravenscroft.
Eight eclectic bands on two nights
Friday, October 12, 2007 starts off with our special guest of Peel Weekend 2006, the songwriter/violinist Marcus Rubio. He played a couple of songs right before Oppenheimer, and now he's going to be on their second album. Second on the bill we have our only returning band from last year's Peel Weekend, the Austin, TX band actually named Peel. This hooky indie-rock band named themselves that for many reasons, one of them being that they did listen to our favorite disc jockey. Due up third is one of our new favorite San Antonio bands, The Hawks (of Holy Rosary). They opened here for Dr. Dog in September and they gave the "dogs" a taste of pure San Antonio rock. Then we have our first night headliner, San Antonio based rockers, Glorium. They have been a long time favorite in San Antonio and have since moved their talents to Austin. We are honored to have these south Texas giants headlining our first night.
Saturday, October 13, 2007 starts off with San Antonio's, The Moriartys bringing their hooky atmospheric rock. This will be their first appearance for MFL and we are excited to see them for the first time. Second on the bill, I sadly say that I don’t think we’ve had featured ANY of our past shows an electronic dub/reggae offering. Happily in honor of Peel, who loved dub/reggae and electronica, we have McPullish playing second from Austin. This is his first show for MFL, but I think we can expect funky bass lines, and trippy grooves. Third up we have Austin's psychedelic popsters, Yellow Fever, who are returning to San Antonio for a second time. Female harmonies and boppy, catchy tunes are in order when they take the stage. Our eighth and final act is Austin’s Brothers and Sisters. This folk-rock ten-piece wowed everyone during a Music For Listeners show in May of 2006, and San Antonio has been waiting to see them back in our city. They aim to please.
We will be spinning Peel Sessions in between sets as well! Come on out for the biggest event honoring John Peel Day in the state John Peel began his radio career, Texas. This could even be the biggest Peel Day event in North America!!!
Check out our neat Flash site designed for the event at http://www.musicforlisteners.com/peelday07/peel07flash.html
Even if you live away from here and can’t come to the event, you can still listen to music from these great Texas bands, by going to the flash site linked above.
Tickets:
Cost: (first night) $8 for 21 and up $12 for 18-20 (second night) $8 - 18 and up
How to buy: At door - 2718 N. St Mary's - San Antonio, TX - U.S.A.

Name: Sod Your iPod: Right Place, Wrong Speed
Venue: Home Club, Singapore Riverside
Town: Singapore
Line Up/Details:
DJs eklektro, KiDG and Ben Harrison pay tribute with Peelcentric music. Peel played Singapore music from bands like Force Vomit, Padres and Astreal when they were still unknown in Singapore.
Having played live for the last two Peel days, BEN HARRISON takes to the decks this too. He had a teenage dream come true when, as guitarist of the Padres, he heard himself being played on John Peel's BBC radio shows. A long-time Peel devotee, Harrison opted out of his school's running team because training clashed with the show. Peel not only introduced him to much of his favourite music, but also informed Harrison's own approach to DJ-ing: on UK college radio; at various clubs in Singapore and K.L; and as co-host of the pioneering internet show, 'Ben & Gerrie's Nice Scream'. as frontman of Etc, a psychopop band who have always cited Peel as their prime influence Harrison has been proud to pay further tribute to his hero - the man who ruined Ben's career as an athlete because he'd rather go home and hear Peel's world service show than attend after-school training.
KiDG is Singapore music luminary Robin Chua. founder of the fanzine, Melt (together with George Chua of the Beat! DJ collective), wrote for Singapore music mag BigO. and with band Livonia : managed to record two mini albums & a single, "Vengeance Is Mine" for BigO's Singles Club. After that, he made an exit from the music scene & went missing for ten years....until TODAY...
EKLEKTRO aka Ivan Thomasz, first became involved with the local alternative music scene writing for Singapore's first rock magazine, BigO, back in 1988 when it was still a B&W photo-copied fanzine. Like many rock writers, he dabbled with the idea of starting his own band and was, at one point, lead singer for the Twang Bar Kings. In 2004, Ivan found a way to spread his love of indie and classic rock records at the Open-Deck nights at the now-defunct Café Cosmo, venue for the original Sod Yer iPod Nite with Ivan, Patrick Chng and Ben Harrison. Ivan's last stint behind the decks at Home Club was at a recent Home Turns Nite. A trade magazine writer by profession, when Ivan is not busy writing about the burgeoning Asian home automation industry, he can be found in little record shops along Coleman St. and North Bridge Rd, scouring the racks for rare or obscure punk and new wave vinyl discs. A diehard Peelie fan who was once very chuffed to hear his bearded hero playing his reque!
