Derek Dahlarge talks about Ibiza '98

Last seen boarding a plane to the Balearics, DJ Derek Dahlarge, has been
reported missing for over a month. Club gig's have been missed, his record
company we're getting very worried about him, and an appeal for information
even went out on the Essential Selection. It probably comes as no surprise
then, that after numerous sightings at Privilege and Space, we should find
him tucked away in a sneaky little corner of the Manumission Motel.
You went missing on a routine trip to Ibiza, what happened ?
I didn't go missing at all. I came out here to do the opening party of
Manumission and they asked me to stay. I've never really had a proper
residency, and I thought that if I was going to have a residency it would
have to be pretty good, so I though yeah. I was a bit dissolutioned with
playing in England anyway, but I didn't really know how dissolutioned I
was until I came out here.
So did you have to cancel stuff back home then?
Well I took the whole of June off for the world cup anyway, and I was
going to go on holiday for the first 3 weeks of July, but there were a
few gigs that I had to blow out.
What about the scene here then, how does it compare to the one back home?
It's rocking. There are people from all over the world here, really
interesting people. The whole reason that I wanted to be a DJ was to be
different from what my friends were doing, and it became a bit formulated
in London, everyone was doing the same thing. And after a while it was just
time to head for the hills and do something different, so I came out here
and did this.
