DJ DIARY: Glasto from the insiders

Annie Nightingale

My dream line up

Annie Nightingale, Sat 11:00pm

Due to my sprained ankle everything has to be approached with extreme care, so for my first show today which I did with Vernon had to be altered slightly.

I manned the studio whilst he went out and about. It’s the first time I’ve worked with Vernon (he’s a very funny and lovely guy) and the first time I’ve been on Radio 1 in day light hours for many years!

The second show I did was with Annie Mac. The music that we both play meshes very well so we had live sets from Plump DJs and Evil 9. All in all I’ve had my dream line up play on the shows this weekend!

Briggy Smale

My balcony blag

Briggy Smale, 8:30pm, Saturday

I did a prize blag. I used Jo Whiley's name to get up on balcony of the Pyramid Stage to see The Kaiser Chiefs. I could see them behind the curtain pacing up and down, looking really nervous.

Someone came up to them and said that they had two minutes before they went on, The band then went in to this huddle (just like Madonna in the early years) and a did a bit of jumping up and down.

It was a total Glastonbury moment

I'd spoken to Ricky earlier about the nerves, but when they went on they were absolutely amazing. The whole performance was spine tingling and littered with special moments. There was this enormous inflatable dinosaur bouncing around on top the crowd. Nick from the band said to Ricky, "I want that dinosaur!" so the crowd pushed the dinosaur over the barrier and on to the stage.

It ended up on stage with Ricky's tie on for most of the show. They threw it back in to the crowd but it came back again - so they kept it.

When Ricky came off he collapsed in a heap due to a combination of exhaustion and relief, I guess, and then there was this really lovely moment where he and his girlfriend Fleur, shared this massive emotional outpouring.

He told me that it was like doing the nativity play when you were a kid and then you see your mum and dad and you burst out crying. He said it was one of the most fantastic experiences of his life.

Colin Murray

My musical highlight so far

Colin Murray, 5:00pm, Saturday

It's five o'clock on Sat…ur…day, and I've just woken up after a three hour sleep cos last night I finished work at 1am. I went out with Hannah from Radio 1 and saw every single corner of the festival and ended up sleeping at the Stone Circle.

Looking forward to seeing New Order and Razorlight, Razorlight, Razorlight!

I had to come down to do a radio show at 11, so I was absolutely shagged. I'm going to do my BBC Three show and I'm going to meet some friends and go to every corner of the festival and get absolutely wrecked again.

Best band I've seen all weekend were The Zutons. I love them! They're better at festivals than they are indoors. Looking forward to seeing New Order and Razorlight, Razorlight, Razorlight!

Edith Bowman

Cramming in the bands

Edith Bowman 4:20pm, Saturday

Day two at Glastonbury has been really good. I've had more time to see more bands. I got up this morning after quite a late night, it has to be said. Colin Murray got in at 6am which was later than me. Dirty boy! We got up did the Magical Mystery Tour and went up to the Circus Fields, and we had Hard-Fi performing on the show.

Then I went across to the beetroot fields where they have a lot of acoustic sessions and stuff. The Editors were in there doing their thing which was brilliant.

Had a snooze after that, and then saw Goldie Lookin' Chain who were phenomenal followed by Kaiser Chiefs and a bit of Ash as well.

So, ramming it in today! Too early to pick a favourite band of the festival but I am expecting a lot from Coldplay tonight and Primal Scream tomorrow.

Steve Lamacq

My Jack White close up fear

Steve Lamacq 12:15pm, Saturday

Last night was good! I watched the White Stripes...the strange thing is Jack is looking altogether more sinister to me, particularly when they had the close-ups on the big screens at the sides of the stage.

He looks like a cross between Edward Scissorhands, Michael Jackson and Joker from the Batman movie which was a wee bit odd I have to say. But I thought they were good, not entirely spectacular, but good and in a nice setting.

We were trying to come up with things that were more nerve-racking than playing at Glastonbury

Today the plan is... well, I’ve just spoken to The Kaiser Chiefs who are quite nervous actually. We were trying to come up with things that were more nerve-racking than playing at Glastonbury and we worked out that taking a penalty in the World Cup Final might be slightly more nerve-racking.

That put his mind at ease obviously. Apart from that, going to see a lot of bands namely Morning Runner, The Futureheads, Art Brute and the Rakes, and take it from their really.

Thing I’m going to see a bit of Coldplay but I also really want to see Mitch Ben in the Caberet Tent. You couldn’t get further apart really. Ben's just written an anti-Colplay tirade saying that all bands today sound like Coldplay.

Scott Mills

Not as muddy as last time (yet)

Scott Mills, 11:05am, Saturday

The last two hours of my life have been not as muddy as I thought it was going to be, especially having seen the pictures on the news yesterday and in the papers. Last year, which was my first Glastonbury, it rained constantly. At least it's kind of dry this time.

The Magical Mystery Tour so far has been good. I quite like the idea that we’re not telling people who's going to be on next.

Chas and Dave are on later and I'd love to see them...

All the DJs are here and you don't know who's going to be paired up with who. It's great to go and speak to people and see what they're doing and looking in their tents and getting a feel for what their experience is like, and to find out who they're looking forward to seeing and what they did last night.

I really wanted to see the Killers yesterday but I didn't get here in time. Chas and Dave are on later and I'd love to see them and there's some quite good comedy on which I didn't even know happened here, so I'm looking forward to seeing that.

Vernon Kay

All aboard Vernon's Glasto Express

Vernon Kay, 9:30am, Saturday

I'm very pleased with myself because this morning I made it from London to the Glastonbury site in one hour and 38 minutes, without breaking any speed limits I hasten to add.

I'm quite please with that! I made it to work ON TIME so I'm very happy about that.
