Global Warming

ListenListen to the doc

The earth is warming up. We're going to have more floods, more disease, fewer polar bears. The only humans left that haven't been wiped out by an apocalyptic series of disasters will be crammed together on an island of ice in the Arctic. If we don't do something about global warming in the next 4 years WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE! Or so the scientists tell us.

But is this really the case? Are the catastrophic predictions justified? Is this simply the next phase of the globe's existence? And if we've only got 4 years, surely it's too late anyway?

Who Cares About Global Warming finds out whether the current interest in climate change, especially since Al Gore's film The Inconvenient Truth, isn't just a load of wind. And if it isn't, what on earth are we going to do about it?

don't patronise younger children CC in Florida schools have been teaching children the facts about global warming and they have made their own decisions about it! Global warming IS happening and if you bothered to watch the inconvenient truth by al gore you would see the relationship between carbon emissions and the warming of the planet. and the rate at which the planet is warming is not just 'nature taking it's course' because it would not rise this dramatically. i am only 15 and i have done a lot of research into global warming and i have very strong views on this subject. if we don't do something now we may not die in 4 years but eventually the living conditions will become so bad we won't be able to live here anymore. how else do you explain the floods in yorkshire recently? my area was badly flooded and people died! this is only the beginning. we have to act NOW!

Kevin williamson
I think all this talk about us causing global warming has taken the wrong way with people. It is a natural thing like in the prehistoric period there was an ice age then it went to tropical it is all the suns doing to i think try to adapt to the weather changes and just let nature take it course

Aleks, Ipswich
If we all do little things, it can make a big difference. There is obviously no guarantee that global warming will cause catastrophic effects, but by the time there is concrete evidence, it will probably be too late, so now is the time to act. For example, using energy-efficient light bulbs - such a small action that can make a big difference. It is everyone's responsibility to act now before it's too late and if everyone makes an effort it can make a difference. Everyone just has to appreciate the seriousness of the matter and that time is running out and to just put that little bit of effort in is essential.

Steve Miller, Hampshire
I do believe we should take greater care of our planet but I do not in any way believe in all the hipe about global warming. Planet earth is a dynamic system that is constantly changing. Earth has had many periods of hot and cold climates in the last 4.5 billion years and is NEVER STABLE for long.

alex , canada
why can't you people understand the fact that we could die if we don't do something i mean comeon have you seen the day after tommorrow they didn't thik it was going to happen then it just dawned on them and many died are we going to wait till feath comes and kncks on our doors because we were lazy and doidn'tget our asses up to help are we idiots?

Olivia, Ipswich
I am doing my Science course work about Global Warming and i didnt realise that it was getting this bad and i ask people please do something to help our earth!!!

steffania ,georgia
Global Warming is when people pollute the world and throw trash in rivers and they hurt animals and Mother Nature. If we don’t stop than we will have to live are lives with a gas mask on are faces. Because the air would be polluted so badly we could not breath. women would have baby’s and they would die when they breath the air. Please help stop global warming you could make a difference. Here are something’s you could do to make a difference. Turn off lights when not in use Unplug TVs because they still use electricity Don’t rinse plates before putting in dishwasher Turn off computers and other electronics If the sun is out you cold you use its lights instead of the ones in your house You could put plants in your house with could help turn the carbon into oxygen You could eat lamb, chicken or etc but not beef because the cow poops a lot and that makes a lot of carbon Driving less (car-pool, riding a bike Recycling and using recycled product

I am 12 years old, and in Science class we learned about global warming and watched Inconvinient Truth, and i come from Holland, and I was practiacally crying! Please you grownups got a chance to live a peacefull life what about us kids, our children (in the future maybe!) Maybe we want to also live! The world is beautiful but we are destroying it!!!!Please help in stopping this! This is my poem, We save earth, earth saves us!

global walming weather anthroprogenic or natural in origin is still a recocnisable process. although the imput from human activities has a disputed significance to the overall process it would be foolish to sit back and ignore the problem. it would be wise in the long run for humans to minamise there impact upon natural processes if this means that there should be a reduction in carbondioxide emissions then would it not be prudent to do so? on the oter hand the problem of global warming canot be blamed on any one nation, does the developing world not have the right to develope to western standards and should it be the developed worlds obligation to help and provide infomation education and technology to make sure that there develpoment is not as costly as our own. this can be higlighted with the rise of china on the global markets. china is currently fueling its economic boom with the use of coal. at this present time china is opening one new coal powered power station every three days! the type of power stations that are being opened are relitivly out dated and are inefcient should it not have been the wests obligation to provide china and also india with the newer "clean coal technologies" thus reducing the total impact of such a fast economic growth. the underlying factors behined all of this is the indevidual or even in some cases joint vested interests of nations, organisations and multinational coporations. looking at resarch it is evident that large international cahnges are needed but also small scale cahnges. one of the main ways to combat the problem of co2 emission is the concentration of changing the preception and asperations of modern society and to increase the efficency of every day life an example would be to lower the enregy consuption per capita GDP and also the co2 per capita GDP. weather that will be bying your tomartoes from a local farm rather imported ones from southern spain or driving a hybrid car or even riding a bike. in conclution it is all our responsability to combat and prepare for climate change weather it be where and how you buy your groceries to who you elect to be your reprisentitive on the global stage.

ok , im 12 and after reading these i relized some people dont care about this big problem in life .. some people think its all Americas fault , it isnt .. its everyones , and ALL of us can change the problem , think of the polar bears , and Greenland , the ice is melting really fast , i watched the inconvenient truth and he made a point , maybe all of you wondering about Global Warming should watch it or ask people about it , im actually not that scared of it because we CAN and SHOULD chang this massive problem , try to read thinfs about how to stop global warming , this WILL kill us all , and please.. just because you probably dont care about it or your life doesnt mean everyone else does , god gave us life , we ARE ment to die but do we really need to die in this horrid way !? i think NOT !

The "scientific" predictions on global warming vary by 400% what you hear on the news is at the high end of that 400% many scientists argue against anthropogenic global warming, the Earth has been naturally warming since the mini ice age.

stuart aberdeen scotland
global warming load of rubbish. nothing to do with greenhouse gases. related to earth's orbit around the sun. every however often, the earth orbits just a bit closer so is warmer, then moves away again and is cooler (ice age). humans have not been around long enough to fully understand this concept, but greenhouse gases are having a minimalistic effect

Mark in Essex, UK
I'm a doubting Thomas about the whole thing. The Romans used to complain about the rise in temperature across the Empire, blaming it for poor crops. Some Historians blame temporary warming for the "fall of Rome". Temperature has always flucuated, there's no "scientifically proven" AGW. Much of the evidence is based on patchy, incomplete records dating only 50 years or so, hardly a long time on a global scale.

Calum Howard, Princes Risborough
Anyone who decides to deny that Global Warming is something we have to help to prevent getting worse are completely irresponsible. They need to wake up. People who say that live life, dont help.. Not only is it SO easy to help, but thats unforgivably selfish for other generations. Global Warming is a dangerous thing that is getting worse, as we speak and anything we can do to help prevent it is going to be brilliant. Think for the future and not just yourself.

Jamie, kent
nothing annoys me more than people with strong opinions who know nothing about it. the media (and even al gore) are trying to make money remember. scary stuff sells! i don't belive much of this global warming stuff but i go along with it because i think energy effeciency and recycling are fundamentally a good idea.

Richard, Middlesbrough
Cant dispute that its not happening, but cant prove its caused by humans. And about the UK getting warmer, expect colder winters also. Once the gulf stream stops, we'll be getting the climate of Moscow.

shean,ohio
everyone please help global warming

Young people...take heart. I've scanned the comments here and the group is a rather young crowd. Please do not lose your collective heads by outlandish claims of hysteria. Just use the brains God gave you, be able to ask questions and draw your own conclusions. Let me suggest questions that are pertinent to the discussion. 1. What shred of observable evidence proves that CO2 (carbon dioxide) is the cause of global warming? 2. Why is it over the last 450,000 years the high rises in CO2 were always PRECEDED by temperature increases...never the reverse? 3. Is it not astonishing that the ice caps of Mars is going through the same type of global warming as Earth? Does this suggest that the cause may be something OTHER than man-made? Finally, the Al Gores and others of the world show you compelling pictures of the EFFECTS of global warming and leave you with the impression that it's all man-made. I believe that the burden of proof rests with those making the assertions. In my judgement, the science is not compelling AT ALL demonstrating that global warming is cause my man's intervention. Take heart young people, do not let this hysteria overwhelm you. Global warming is a natural phenomenon.

Natalie...Aldershot....Surrey
I think that global wrming will not happen in the next 4 years for some reason i doubt it will happen that quickly!...and not going to die!...thats just silly!

craig, manchester
yes I believe in global warming as people believed in global cooling in 1975, the climate fluctuates and it is pathetic to think that a few politicians can sit in a room and play god and determine whether they are going to allow the globe to warm or cool at whatever rate the desire. Take a look at that raging sun, don't be so naive to think we have any influence.

How sad that so many young people here are worrying that they are gonna die in 4 years time. Jehovahs Witnesses have been setting the date for years and they always get it wrong. But they dont pretend to be scientists!AGW is a LIE they are feeding you with your cornflakes! Wise up!

I love the Earth. I'm a Radical Environmentalist, committed to massive action NOW to make the planet safe for the future. What am I doing? I'm taking old cans of R-12 I buy in auto parts stores and releasing the contents to the atmosphere. I'm burning big piles of coal and brush, winter and summer, outside, and any old tyres and plastic I can find as well. I keep my poorly insulated American home at about 80F in winter and 64F summer. I drive a 1983 Ford truck, which gets 8 miles to the gallon, at least 300 miles per week. My goal: render the Earth absolutely uninhabitable for humans. We all die, the buildings all fall down, and in another 50,000 years the planet will be cleansed and nobody will be able to tell we were here. That's Radical Environmentalism. All you people who what to actually INHABIT the earth are just selfish. YOU'RE the problem. You suck and you don't deserve to live. Q. What's the difference between a developer and an environmentalist? A. The developer wants to build homes in pristine, unspoiled areas. The environmentalist - well, he already has one. Love & Peace from Merika

Hey people, of course we are not going to die- last year in august we were meant to die, for some reason or other but we're still here! Aren't we? Anyway, my mum was one of those 'hippies' years ago telling people about global warming and people laughed at her! Now she's laughing at people who have only just thought about global warming. From a young age my family have told me about global warming and what I do as a person to help reduce global warming. Adults need to think about the generations that will follow in their foot steps, like me! I will be clearing up the mess in a few year's time and you guys will demanding better pensions!!!!!!!!!!! Dude, my mum made my family and I use recycled toilet paper- it hurts, but I know it was good for the planet.

mark london
why should e bother make the wrold a bettr place lets all just move to the moon and die

hodman
i am shocked about what is happening to the climate but i dont notice any real change since i have been hearing about it

bob
its americas fault

Don Jia, Netherworld
it's too late already,we're all going to hell. Our parents knew about this, but did nothing but smoke pot, cry "revolution" and wear disgusting bellbottoms. All the bets are off, I'm gonna do what I wan to. I'm gonna drive down the block in my SUV to get some new sneakers. Then I'm coming home, turning the thermostat way up, 'cause I don't like wearing nothing but my underwear when I'm inside. I'll play on my Xbox 360 all night, then fall asleep with the lights on. Life is grand.

jess ,england
why cant everyone just listen im only 12 n i no that if everybody did their bit we would all be better off. its not jjust 1 or 2 countrys to blame its all of us so we all have to muck in to get the problem sorted !!! if adults had brains!!!

nikkie hereford-england
If everyone payed attension to the truth years ago then all of this would not be happening would it we have only ourselfs to blame

Kuwait
I think that Global Warming is true. I agree that it IS somewhat human's fault. If people don't do some thing about Global Warming... well, we'll die. Stop spreading Greenhouse Gasses and Stop Polluting the Air. And Pray that it helps. I'm studying abotu Globall Warming as a school project. After all that I read, I think it's a miracle Earth hasn't blown up before. The garbage that people waste. You should at least RECYCLE!!!!!!!!!

johny
we should all do our thing to help, even if it costs us using our cars less. what matter more, our cars and electrical equipment or our lives? oviously our lives

Anonymous
Global warming is an experience we are all choosing to take part in. The decision is a global one. Things need to get undesirable enough to invoke change. The question is: At what extent will we as a global entity decide things are now undesirable...who will make that choice? So decide for yourself....right now. Start living as if things are undesirable and you will experience a more undesirable existence. Live as if things are "as they should be" and you will experience that. On the other hand, even a Rat will die on cereal alone. Good Luck earth beings.

Aanje, Anchorage, Alaska
Any one who doubts the effects of global warming, please come and visit us here in Alaska! Since 1992, ALL of our many glaciers are in catasrophic retreat, the treeline has moved noticeably up the mountains, and forests are spreading out on thawing tundra. Before 1990, "Breakup"(Spring thaw) occured in mid-May. Each year since 1990, it has come ever earlier. Since 2000, "Breakup" now occurs in early April. We are now experiencing thunderstorms here in Southcentral Alaska on a regular basis, and even had a confirmed tornado touchdown on the Kenai Peninsula in July 2005, and several unconfirmed twisters since 2000, as well as several devestating Microbursts. Summer temperatures regularly hit 100F in the Interior, and 85F in the south! We are experiencing catasrophic forest fires and Spruce Beetle infestations It used to start snowing in Late September here. We are lucky to get snow now by November(or even December). Instead it just rains. This past October, we anjoyed temperatures in the 50s and even 60s F. Since 2000, our Polar Bear population has been cut in half due to weakening ice flows. This is the Arctic! This is not normal, and is getting worse. It makes me nervous when I read statements of denial from Europeans. I expect that sort of thing from my ignorant, brain-washed SUV-driving countrymen in the USA. But I have always expected more from Europeans. I think that many of us here are kind of counting on Europe to take the lead as America collectively looses its mind on the world stage. Wether man or nature, or both are to blame-doesn't matter! It IS real, and it IS happening. And keep this in mind-If the arctic becomes as warm as Miami or Malta, than how warm will Miami or Malta become???

Josephine chan
I think we must take some action to reduce it.. we must change the way of thinking for those people who don't believe this fact.... please take action... save this world!!!!!

Lindsay, Toronto, Canada
To Everyone who believe people who are concerned about global warming are pessimists, please get a grip! Come on people, we know what is necessary, however, we as humans do not want to acknowledge our mistakes and change our lives. Who wants to be surrounded by plastic and continue to eat McDonald's any longer anyways. Revolution!

G, Japan
Oh my god is everyone retards!? Dwight Kennedy, have you read the UN INDEPENDENT report? Don't you think it might be better to play it safe and reduce greenhouse gas emmissions? What harm will it do? Why arn't humans to blame? What amazing evidence do you have? JANE, TEAGAN, SCHOOL CHILD nobody has said you will die in 4 years. Read the article again. JONATHAN from west yorkshire, i appreciate your anti-USA sentiments, but perhaps its more than just NASA, everyone who ever flys or drives a car is partly to blame. Lets all do our best to learn about Global Warming, BEFORE we comment about it, eh?

Stacy, Philippines
"The big lie here is that humans are to blame. If we're resposible for this round of Global warming then we have to be responsible for the last one back 100,000 years ago." -Dwight Kenney, Nova Scotia Canada -EXCUSE ME?! Are you seriously okay? The issue isn't about who's to be blamed. Why don't you try opening your eyes? Do SOMETHING that could help. PLUS! The fact that we are not responsible for what happened a hundred years ago doesn't change the fact that we are PRESENTLY HASTENING our planets demise! What's wrong with you?! It's people like you that destroys our planet. "I feel sad for Richard Branson, he's pledged $3 Billion to fight global warming, somewhere someone's pissing thier pants laughing." -Nobody gives a damn whether you feel sad about anything.

Louise
Everybody isnt going to die in 4 years time to global warming, but climate change is happening and all I can say is you should have listened to the hippies all those years ago :D!

Melanie
hey people have said to me before that the world was going to end tommorow and its really stupid. I dont think the world is just going to suddenly heat up and we all day, its going to gradually get warmer over many years...

courteney manchester
i dont think this should happen it should just be hot or cold

Dwight Kenney, Nova Scotia Canada
I learned about the earth warming during my first Science class back in the '70's in college. Scietists have been aware of it for about 100 years now, so get a grip folks. Most of these scietific studies are such old news but if a scientist can link whatever his research is to global warming then he'll recieve more grant money. To go against the grain and is to go broke. The big lie here is that humans are to blame; If we're resposible for this round of Global warming then we have to be responsible for the last one back 100,000 years ago. I feel sad for Richard Branson, he's pledged $3 Billion to fight global warming, somewhere someone's pissing thier pants laughing.

I dont really beleive that the people of the world will be dead in 4 years. people might sat that but i dont really think it is true.i am a school child and like i have said befor i do not beleive it. i think that the people of the world should help me to try and get the world more healthyer. thank you.

k and a
global warming will affect everyone, medc's aren't taking responsibility for how much carbon is being emitted into the atmosphere. in the future ledc's such as bangledesh will suffer worse floods than they already do. something has to be done now to increase the chances of future survival.

jonathon from west yorkshire
i feel this is a really important case and EVERYONE should help this matter. global warming should not all be blamed on carbon emmisions it should be blamed on nasa too. they are sending rockets into space which is destroying the ozone layer. the americans just want a name for their selves and they dont care about other people.

amy jayne from somercotes
i am already trying my best to save global warming but all my friends think its fun to use 4 packs of paper every day. just for 1 picture that is about 4 centimeters.but i always use recycled paper towels and kitchen towel from Tesco and co-op. i also recycle my Christmas cards and use them for jotters.
