Kraftwerk are the reason music sounds like it does today. Pioneers, 20 years before their time, they invented much of what we recognise as the tools of electronic music. But quite apart from being inventors they were funky as hell and became the most sampled artsits ever. Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos presents Kraftwerk, so much more than 4 geeky German blokes who loved bicycles...

Andy Hutchinson Nottingham England Ron and Russell Mael SPARKS - they're still re-inventing pop music now listen to Hello Young Lovers and Lil Beethoven gems!
Mark, Leamington Spa I love Kraftwerk! Always have, always will. But sampled more than any other artist? Surely James Brown might have something to say about that!!
Christine Jones, Ely, Cambs I chose to go into labour listening to the Tour de France album. We had it on repeat. My son, Leon was born to Elektro Kardiogramm. Its amazing how music completly artifically generated can be so natural and physical. I was in a trance.
Jeremy, Exmouth agreed. 'The Model' has to be the best example of pure electronic pop, and, in a wider sense, probably one of the finest pop songs of all time, irrespective of genre.
jims ouse, liverpool kraftwerk were certainly the pioneers as far as making electronic music mainstream, but tangerine dream most certainly deserve a mention.i was fortunate to see them play live some twenty years ago and for nearly 3 hrs i was totaly amazed.it`s just unfortunate that they don`t often get mentioned in these debates when they should.
Al, London They're world class. No-one - and I do mean my other loves Joy Division/New Order and Ultravox - can come close to Kraftwerk's sublime music. I suppose I was eleven when my older brother brought home their 1977 classic Trans-Europe Express and that was it really. Awesome. When someone on the documentary said they were from a different planet, they weren't joking!
Radio-Activity has that amazing Cold War feeling; the idea that the frozen east and all of the baggage of Nazism and later Communism came through on the title track, Uraniam and Ohm Sweet Ohm. Just brilliant.
I've seen them live several time and they're in a class of their own. Musique non-stop!!
Jamming T. Banner of London The Beatles, Beach Boys, Elvis, The Stones, Sparks, Bowie, there are many.
mick mc caugherty, omagh if you could only own 4 albums, make sure they are:trans europe express, the man machine, computerworld and electric cafe
Cheeky Cheeky Romania Simon Cowell, who else can take true responsibility for the wonderful state of modern pop!!!
Sean Condon, St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada I was 10 years old when I first heard the single version of "Autobahn" on AM radio. It really was like an alien transmission: I'd heard nothing like it before, and have heard nothing so revolutionary since. And things only got better from there! Saw them live in Toronto on the 2003 tour, and I have to say, that was really one of the most electric rock 'n' roll shows (and Kraftwerk really ARE rock 'n' roll!) I've ever been fortunate enough to experience.
Chelsea, Glasgow I first heard Kraftwerk as an 11 year old and have been totally captivated ever since, 27 years later their music still sounds fresh, what an incredible contribution they have made to the world of popular music. I continue to hear elements of Kraftwerk in so much of the contemporary music around today, truly unique, inspirational, seminal, and deserving of their rank, alongside The Beatles, as the most influential band of all time.
Mick Whelan Dublin Quite simply the masters. Freindchip.
Lothar, Cuba Kraftwerk are surely deserving of their status, more so given the lack of airplay they receive despite their influence. That said, it's worth mentioning groups like Einstürzende Neubauten who likewise influenced many (e.g. Depeche Mode, Nick Cave, Ministry etc...).
Gavin C. Doyle Ireland Hi All.
Kraftwerk ist einfach die beste Gruppe der ganzen Welt!
I am only 18 and speak for the younger generation of Kraftwerkians(there are many). Not enough people know how influential this band really is! in an interview Queen Latifa said"My two favourite songs of all time are 'Planet Rock' and 'Numbers' guess she didnt know that they are virtually the same song!!!!Go Kraftwerk!!
stef, london I'm glad Alex Kapranos picked up on the architecture of the music, the structures, the repetition and minimalism - and not just the fact that they used synthesisers and funny noises. That's what is so special about kraftwerk - they created new pop structures and narratives out of lean, simple sounds, going round and round relentlessly.
It still blows my mind how they managed to produce such expansive, ambitious and 'difficult' music and at the same time the most uncluttered, disciplined and playful pop... pop you can whistle as you walk down the street, pop that gets stuck in your head.
Maybe the fact that Kraftwerk ARE a pop band, yet sound nothing like anything that came before, secures their place as inventors of the new pop.
a guy named JULIAN, America - cincinnati Ohio The great thing about Kraftwerk and some other bands is that they learned how to use the synthesizer.
Sean,Leeds The first few albums by Black Sabbath invented and defined many of todays sub-genres in rock music and, like it or not, rock/metal is one of the biggest and broadest musical forms in world today. From the grooves of stoner rock, to the almost ambient goth of doom metal, to the 1000 bpm insanity of death metal and the extremist beliefs of black metal, it's all down to those first few Sabbath albums. Forget the reality TV Ozzy hob nobbing with the very people he was once rallying against (politians etc) and shaking like a leaf in a hurricane. Just remember that without these guys in the late 70s and early 80s then city centers at the weekend wouldn't still be full of teenage kids wearing black.
dave alien, england there will never be another group of people who will truly be classed as inovators and there influences can b heard throughout music plus of course without them there would be no omd another very underated band of their era
Marty Netherlands 29 wen I was young I reconized it as special and they have an unique sound
jim haslam (bham) "Kraftwerk",what can you say?,probably the best band of all time, for people who really enjoy music,no Kraftwerk means no d,mode, omd,g.numan, plus many many other's,we owe them a huge debt of gratitude, but why dont they get more airplay???? it baffles me!!!!
Darren Meredith Tangerine Dream 1970
Susan Salandy-Moolchan, Trinidad&Tobago Tangerine Dream - the 'Dream's soundtrack music influenced a generation of moviegoers - the train scene in Risky Business is particularly memorable, not just for the visuals, but the background music itself that so fluidly incorporated the sound of the moving train, at the same time enhancing/ highlighting the emotion of the scene...
Yello also were early influences on modern pop.
If you hadn't already said it elsewhere, BOWIE and Iggy Pop would have been at the top of my list for both their individual and collective influences.
Stephen Goodair What an amazing documentry!
'Tanzmusik' is THE perfect song, a timeless little gem what a classic
Have your say!
Who else could lay claim to inventing modern pop music?
