Size Matters

 Listen to the doc

Think community-funded music project and you probably have embarrassing visions of sad old people expressing themselves through the medium of dance.

But a new generation of musicians like Arctic Monkeys, The Futureheads, and Lostprophets are saying they couldn't have made it without help from youth centres and schemes like the New Deal.

Drum and bass innovator Roni Size donated his 1997 Mercury Music Prize money to The Basement Project, in Bristol, where he learnt his trade.

Roni travels from the community centres of Derry, Northern Ireland to the pirate radio stations of East London to hear how young people are overcoming their backgrounds and carving out a career in music.
