He kicked off talking about ex-Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes:
"...He turned up (to Peel Acres) once driving a car which cost ten times more than our house..."

Golf:
"...when people come up to me and say I've just taken up golf, it's like I've entered the anti-chamber of death..."

First Musical Memory:
"...played by the band in the circus as Birkenhead...not a very hip selection..."

Fine wines and good conversation... Elvis:
"...hearing Elvis come out of your radio when you were 14 was like Saul on the road to Damascus..."

Hearing Little Richard:
"...a life transforming experience...it's like seeing people having it off...not that I ever have..."

Radio 1 in the early days:
"...it was a disadvantage to like music..."

Radio 1 Christmas Parties:
"...the first thing everyone would do is rush the seating plan to see if they were sitting next to Bates...there was the Hairy Monster - a most appropriately named man - and he would interview us in turn...this was at the time I was the only married DJ not married to a European Airline hostess..."

First Peel Sessions albums:
"...the BBC seemed against making money, thought it was rather vulgar...I talked to Richard Brandson, he wasn't interested...eventually the bloke who is the husband of my agent decided to do it..."

Peelie holds court... A Book?
"...I'd love to write a book, but I just don't have time...people keep giving me CDs to listen to..."

Putting together the show:
"...I do the bulk of it myself...I sit there at home and Sheila brings me glasses of red wine...you have to be faintly obsessive to do it, otherwise you'd just go to the pub..."

Impersonations of him:
"...Mike Reid, the former Radio 1 DJ, used to do impressions of me, but I had to be told when he was doing me..."
