One Live In Cardiff Kicks OffUpdated 20 Oct 2000
Radio One Live in Cardiff has kicked off today (Friday), with Jo Whiley live from the University Tavern. During the week-long event, there'll be plenty of big names to enjoy, including Coldplay, JJ72, Leftfield, PJ Harvey, and the Utah Saints.
The Utahs are supporting Leftfield next Thursday 26th October, and they told us the sell-out night is going to be one of their hardest shows ever: "We're massive fans of them. It's going to make us work really hard because we're on an hour before them, so we've got to be really on it that night." The last time they played in Cardiff was to support U2, but they say they're just as excited to get the crowd going for Leftfield: "It's another good gig for us, so there's a good vibe about Cardiff." Soulwax's Welsh wad Tomorrow (Saturday) sees Pete Tong's Essential Mix live from the Welsh International Ice Rink with Timo Maas and Seb Fontaine.
"Our tour manager told us to go and change our money to Welsh pounds. It was a kind of a joke, and we nearly did!" PJ Harvey's pub gig PJ Harvey is set to play her only live date in the UK this year from Cardiff. The gig's sold out, but Polly's already given a preview to a few of her neighbours in her local pub: "It only held about a hundred people, and they were climbing through the windows and blocking the street outside." If you're not lucky enough to have a ticket, you can catch her performance on Thursday 26th October on Radio 1's John Peel show.
Jo's show came live from the Student Union Bar at the University, however David Gray - scheduled to perform today - was too ill to entertain the crowd that gathered! He turned up for a quick chat and to announce a few tour changes because of his illness but the crowd weren't disappointed...
