"Right, enough of this towney drinking, let's go to Kemptown! Start off by walking up St. James' Street and you'll hit the Sidewinder on the right. Full of Amex employees, but they've got a beer garden and that's usually filled with minus-Z-list-celebs like 'Polly' from EastEnders! (remember? That journalist with bad 80s hair). They do 'fancy food', like chicken with la-la-sauce and coooous coooous, (but not on a Monday, mind!). Just round the corner from that is The Crown. Craaaayyyziest place evaaaar! Frequented by the old folk, landlady constantly pissed on Sherry and the pint prices change every minute (see note on land lady). Hey, there's a roaring fire place and Simon & Garfunkel galore! And then, on the left, you'll hit Hand In Hand. To do with the Kemptown Brewery-oldest brewery in B'ton. They do mean brews, German wheatbeer on tap and Belgian Cherry beer. (mind you, if you wanted Belgian beer, you'd do 'One Live In Brussels'- silly me). Further up the road (on the left) is the Polar Bar. Nice pics of Sid Vicious and cushy leather sofas/chairs. Further up you get The Cannon. Highly unspectaclyaaaar, apart from the mean breakfasts.
Anyways, keep walking until you hit Rock Street (give it 10 mins.- 15 for the lovely Chris M.). And there's The Rock. The minute you walk in there, you're part of the family. Say hello to Fran & Juliet for me, won't you! Fantastic atmosphere, downstairs shag-lounge and the coolest bar staff in Brighton. Ok, so opposite The Rock you have the I Goe Inn. Unfortunately, I never goed inn, so I can't comment. The Dragon is there, too- house vodka for 30p-kinda-thing. We like. If you can't be bottomed to go this far into Camp, ahem, Kemptown, try the Hanover area. Shedloads of pubs, all I say is- go to the Setting Sun on Windmill Street. Have a pint of San Miguel or Hoegaarden on tap or an organic cider and Jalapeno Crisps and sit in the garden, watching the sun set over Brighton. Aaaww. Gotta go back to watching the ntl-preview channel now. Love you loads. SIM-0NExxx"
Cat Flea:
"Clearly the best Pub/Bar in Brighton is the Royal Pavillion Tavern Just off Old Steine, Whilst ignored by most people, the knowledgeable realise that it is the home of some of the best nights in Brighton. During the day the pub is often quiet but serves great food and as Brighton goes, it's not too expensive. In the evenings though the Tavern Club comes into force (upstairs!!!??) which is home to the best indie nights in Brighton (along with Snide at the Escape on Tuesdays) the best has to be Kick Out the Jams on Friday night; it attracts all ages and all different types of people (and it's pub - not bar - prices which makes a huge difference on a Friday night!) Get there before 11.30 though or else you will have a long, long wait.
If you fancy a slightly different scene head to the Fortune Of War in the Kings Arches on the seafront. But if you are after a more lively time head to the Tzar Bar, again in the Kings Arches (next to the Honeyclub)."
Dan:
"It has to be Alleycats off East Street - they even show movies before the evening really gets going for session drinkers. Or if you're in wrong neck of the woods for that there's The Eddy up by the station which is the scary kind of expensive, but it does have a selection of big leather sofas with "moody" lighting to hide how ugly we all really are. If you fancy a pint at the end of Palace Pier (don't call it Brighton pier, if any local hears you there will be calls for lynching) head to Horatios Bar (where you can also do karaoke but I don't know what night). Or alternatively you could just head to the park and sit on a bench with a bottle of White Lightning..." Dan :o)
