Introduction

Funnily enough, none of the members of Stornoway have ever been to Stornoway (it's on the Isle of Lewis, in the remote Outer Hebrides). In fact, they're based in Oxford. According to their MySpace profile, the band consists of "an ornithologist, an occasional Russian translator, a South African Pirate Captain, a trumpeting horse, and a human radio." You get the impression this may not be wholly true.

What we do know, though, is that Stornoway make magical, heart-warming, uplifting folk music. Their sound is part Guillemots, part Badly Brawn Boy, part Belle and Sebastian. Lyrically, they yearn for the simple, outdoor life. "Outside the window, spring is here but we're gonna hibernate under a pile of A4 snowflakes", sings frontman Brian Briggs on We are the Battery Human.

Here's proof of how good they are - they recently won not one but three slots on the bill at Glastonbury 2009, after competing in the Emerging Talent contest, and have been played by Radio 1's Colin Murray and 6 Music's Tom Robinson. Picked to perform on the BBC Introducing stage at Big Weekend by Tim Bearder of BBC Oxford, Stornoway are guaranteed to captivate you.
