Ayia Napa Questionaire

Timmi on Nissi Beach Name:
Timmi Magic

Occupation:
DJ/Member of the Dreem Teem

What will you be up to in Ayia Napa this year?
The beauty of working on a holiday island is that you can enjoy yourself in-between. We like to be approachable, so we'll be having a drink, chatting to people, saying hi.
But basically, with people coming from as far as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, we have the responsibility to entertain, and bring them into the UK garage scene. We're in Ayia Napa every week at our residency at Abyss.

Before you go
What's the most important luxury item you'll be taking with you this year?
I'm a bit of a telly buff, so when I'm hung-over every night (which I will be), I can chill out in the afternoons with a DVD player. It doubles up as a CD player, so I've got a bit of music and a bit of tv.

What 3 essential items would you advise people to take to Napa?
1. Suntan lotion
2. Some form of headwear
3. One for the ladies - trainers/flat shoes. Have something you can run and muck about in. In places like the Square there's lots of broken bottles, so carry a first aid kit as well. If you can get a car as opposed to mopeds, it cuts the odds, so you can come home in one piece - carry your driving license.

Describe what your 'look' for Ayia Napa 2001 will be.
1999 - Really colourful, in my linen phase
2000 - Shorts vests and shoes
2001 - A little bit more 'bumpery', trainers, sandals, and back in my shorts and vest

Nightlife
What's your favourite way / place to kick off a big night out in Napa?
Everyone meets up at the Square. You get all the flyers down there for what's going on. There's a host of bars and lots of different music.

Describe a typical night out in Napa.
A nice meal, Mexican or Japanese, Indian or Chinese, chill out, then move on to the Square for a few drinks. Now your legs are starting to go, and even before you get in the club, you're already 'wha-hey, lovely'!
There are after parties so you can see the night through till 6am. By midday, the heat's so bad you've gotta get up, so it's off to the beach for a plate of steak and chips.

Which clubs on the island should you not miss and why?
I only move from club to club to vary my music tastes. By the time I get to the club stage, it's wherever the crowd's going. Vary your tastes if you can afford it. Check out an r&b night, check out Trever Nelson or Grooverider.

Which part of Britain are the most full on party people from?
The cutting edge of Britain still seems to be London, but it's sometimes a little too busy and competitive. You find the bigger cities are 'having it', but everywhere you go has received UK garage really well.

Island Trivia
How does Ayia Napa compare to established 'party meccas', such as Ibiza?
Strip down all the raving, forget the clubs, and see what the island stands for. A club is a club - once you've had a few drinks you can go anywhere and have a good time.
So what are the facilities like?
The first thing is people's attitudes. Because of Cypriot links with the UK, everyone seems to be a lot more approachable. Even with cab drivers, you can have deeper conversations, a little bit more than the Spanish, who might knock you for a couple more pesetas.
They don't treat you as holidaymakers, they talk to you as a person. I spoke to one cabbie and told him I was coming back, he took £40 out of his pocket and said bring back these cigarettes. He didn't feel worried about doing that. I go to Ayia Napa because it's hotter, there are lots of beaches, and the food's nice.

Have you had any Napa nightmares?
One year my suitcase didn't turn up, and I had to wait 8 hours for a connecting flight, but otherwise, no.

What's the worst rip off in Ayia Napa?
They've clamped down on riding mopeds without your helmet on. You might get a policeman pull you up over that. Otherwise there's nothing else.

If Ayia Napa were a drink, what would it be?
Mikee and I invent drinks.
One year we were on chocolate labumba's.
The year after it was sambucas.
Mikee, being taller and probably able to consume more drinks, got the title Mikee 'Sambuca' B. Last year it was Mikey '3-B' It was Mikee B, brandy and Baileys. I should get this on copyright!
Napa would be a Sambuca, but it could be a soft drink cocktail for when you're sitting on the beach.
