Name:
Spoony
Occupation:
DJ/Member of the Dreem Teem
What will you be up to in Ayia Napa this year?
I can't tell you everything, some of it isn't fit for broadcasting! We hope to do some partying, sunbathing, a bit of football, some jet-skiing, and go to the other side of the island for a bit of golf.
As well as the Radio 1 event, we're launching our own night out there, at Abyss.
Before you go
What's the most important luxury item you'll be taking with you this year?
My portable DVD player, which also plays music, so I'm never too far from a bit of entertainment.
What 3 essential items would you advise people to take to Napa?
1. Sunglasses
2. Sun tan lotion
3. Condoms
Describe what your 'look' for Ayia Napa 2001 will be.
Chilled and relaxed, lots of cotton and linen.
Nightlife
What's your favourite way / place to kick off a big night out in Napa?
Marinella's Bar in the Square. There are some steps and you can perch there. They play the best music on the square. We'll be hanging out there with Dangerous D on the mic.
Describe a typical night out in Napa.
At eight or nine I go and have something to eat, then it's back to the hotel to sleep it off.
Then I get dressed and go down to the square, and hang out at Marinella's. Then we'll go to the club to do our thing. After that, depending on how I feel, it's back to the hotel, or to Insomnia for the after party.
Which clubs on the island should you not miss and why?
Club Abyss, because for the last few years Pzazz has dominated clubbing in Ayia Napa, but Abyss has made big in-roads into breaking that monopoly. The Castle's really nice as a venue, as is Ice Ku. It was a toss-up between those two where we would have held our Dreem Teem night, but Abyss just pipped it.
Which part of Britain are the most full on party people from?
I'd like to say London, but Londoners are quite spoiled because all the DJ's are here. If I get a booking for Leeds, the north east, Reading, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cardiff, going out to the west, I look forward to them, because those people enjoy themselves.
Island Trivia
How does Ayia Napa compare to established 'party meccas' such as Ibiza?
Ibiza's the only established party mecca, it's had a 15 year start on Ayia Napa. Napa's just a resort on an island, but Ibiza gives up its whole island to clubbing. Physically, it won't be able to compete, not until Cyprus incorporates Larnaca and Nicosia and the other big towns. You do have odd nights in Ibiza that are soulful, but Ayia Napa has a continuous soulful vibe.
Recommend your favourite bar or restaurant in Ayia Napa to us.
There's a nice little Mexican, and a nice Japanese. There's also Limelight's where you have like a whole barbecued chicken.
A new West Indian restaurant's just opened called Sugar & Honey. It'll be nice to go there to see what their rice and peas are like.
Have you had any Napa nightmares?
Not as yet, touch wood. One time I had 25 minutes to go to the airport, and made it in twenty four and-a-half. That was close.
What's the worst rip off in Ayia Napa?
The taxis! They charge like £4 just to go two minutes down the road. It's quite expensive over short journeys, and to be honest, most trips you take will be short. Obviously it's that time of year, so they make the most of it. But everything else there is quite cool.
If Ayia Napa were a drink, what would it be?
Something different... A nice long glass of lemonade with pomegranate juice. How different is that!
