Ayia Napa Questionaire
Updated 24th June 2001

Trevor in Napa last year Name:
Trevor Nelson

Occupation:
DJ/TV Presenter

Before you go
Which essential items would you advise people to take to Napa?
Aspirins or something like that. I had the worst hangover in like ten years out there. You're almost encouraged to drink. I don't want to encourage alcohol use, but it does happen out there.

Sunblock. If you've been out raving and think you're gonna sunbathe, it's the worst thing you can do. Drink loads and loads of water.

Describe what your 'look' for Ayia Napa 2001 will be.
Normally I'm seen as quite smooth, but it's so hot everyone's in what they call 'wifebeater' vests, shorts, linen and cotton trousers. Some guys do the flip flop thing, show their arms off, or go barechested on mopeds. People dress down, they aren't as pretentious as at home.

There's an army base in Cyprus, and last year the soldiers gave me tops to wear, Green Beret stuff. They love the fact that Ayia Napa's turned into this mad raver's paradise, as they've got something to do. And some girls to look at.

Nightlife
What's your favourite way / place to kick off a big night out in Napa?
A lot of people start off in their hotels, some are slumming it. That comes from going to Southport Weekenders, because a lot of that crowd are used to that.

Describe a typical night out in Napa.
The square becomes absolutely packed, it's like Trafalgar Square every night.
The thing is that r&b music is quite chilled, so there's this massive build up, and then off to the club. Then you've got all these people who'd normally be quite stush, absolutely freaking out to mellow music. It freaks the hell out of me!

I've never seen people drink so much. They're very tight on drugs - if you're going out there, don't think you can smuggle some little lump of something through, it's not worth your while. But people drink! I saw some real messes out there, but it's all fun. Everyone's dancing, it's the best rave you're gonna get in Black music.

Which clubs on the island should you not miss and why?
I'm going to Ayia Napa five times this year, playing in Ice Ku for Radio 1, The Castle for an MTV Lick party, and a night called Funk. If you're going out there looking for me, I'll probably crash into you at some stage in your holiday.

Which part of Britain are the most full on party people from?
Without a doubt the most up-for-it ravers are the Irish, and anyone from north of Manchester, Leeds, or the north east. They're the most bugged out/freaked out/funkadelic crowds. They're out to lunch, most of them.

Island Trivia
There's never been a reason for me to go to Ibiza. But from what my friends say, Napa is not like Ibiza.

If you want a quiet time in Ibiza, rent a villa, go to a superclub or grunge it, you can. But in Ayia Napa if you're going you're going. You're part of the tribe and that's it. And it's much smaller.

Recommend your favourite bar or restaurant in Ayia Napa to us.
My favourite bar, restaurant and place to chill was back at my hotel, because every time I went out I got rushed and stressed!

I'm not saying I don't like meeting people, but it's really quite intense out there, everybody knows you. It's the first place where DJ's and MC's are truly famous. DJ Luck and MC Neat, Spoony, when they walk down the road everybody knows who they are, so if you want a quiet time you can't walk down the street.

Have you had any Napa nightmares?
I got completely paraletic and drunk at Insomnia. Apparently I had my shirt over my head, jazz-dancing, spinning on my head, drinking champagne. This group of girls were going "That can't be Trevor Nelson, that's never Trevor Nelson!".

At the end I wanted to be the last out of the club, and then the cleaner came out. I was so upset I ran back in. Someone on a moped gave me a lift and I don't know how I got to bed. But I did.

What's the worst rip off in Ayia Napa?
Probably certain clubs, how they squeeze people in after a certain hour. The downside of Napa is that clubwise everything starts after midnight. If you wanna go to a club earlier, you've got no option.

When you're leaving at twelve and the club finishes at four, and your favourite DJ's on at 2am, you've gotta stay put.

Taxi drivers and hotel staff are grasses. They're like the M15, undercover. Don't get up to anything and think you're gonna get away with it, just because - oh, she's a maid! She'll tell the police!

If Ayia Napa were a drink, what would it be?
Sambuca, that's the drink that I got hurt with.
