Fabio and Grooverider have opened the Radio 1 weekend in Ayia Napa in style, they played Arena 1 @ the Castle Club to a suntanned crowd. We'll have more on the night itself very soon. But in the meantime, see what Fabio had to say on the subject of Ayia Napa when we cornered him recently!
Name:
Fabio
Occupation:
DJ
What will you be up to in Ayia Napa this year?
I'm just gonna be DJing and hanging out, a bit of chilling, catching a bit of the sunshine - we're not gonna get any sunshine here so I'm gonna enjoy myself. I went there last year and thought that it was quite an interesting place. So I'm gonna be hanging around for a little while, I'll be checking out Spoony and the guys and Trevor - I'll just be seeing what's going on.
Before you go
What's the most important luxury item you'll be taking with you this year?
My Records.
What 3 essential items would you advise people to take to Napa?
1. Quite a lot of money
2. Pair of shorts
3. Flip Flops
Describe what your 'look' for Ayia Napa 2001 will be.
With me, it's always a vest, some shorts and some nice trainers. I don't want to go too over the top, my look's just gonna be the 'sunshine look'.
Nightlife
What's your favourite way / place to kick off a big night out in Napa?
I don't really do the going out thing, I don't really socialise that much, I'm too old, I hate standing up in clubs and if I'm not DJing I get quite annoyed if I don't hear the music that I want to hear, but I'll definately be checking out the rest of the Radio 1 stuff while I'm out there.
Which part of Britain are the most full on party people from?
I've got to say for Drum & Bass, because all eras are different for different genres. I played in Cambridge last night and that was really good. Also Bristol is the mecca for Drum & Bass really 'cos of Roni Size and the amount of artists that come from there.
Island Trivia
How does Ayia Napa compare to established 'party meccas', such as Ibiza?
I don't think you can make comparisons, I think Ibiza is such an established party island. Ayia Napa's different, I was quite disappointed with the scale of the dance events going on there last year. For black music it's a really good spot and a lot of guys think that black music's been excluded from Ibiza. I prefer Ibiza, you feel the dance heritage there, Ayia Napa's still a little bit ambiguous, people still don't know quite what they want. But I think for black music it's excellent, for R&B and Garage and Drum & Bass for an island like that, if you want to go and hear black music - it's the one really.
Have you had any Napa nightmares?
Yeah! I'm not sure that I should go into this but we had a night where they stopped me, Grooverider and Spoony at the airport when we were going home, 'cos they actually thought that we had something to do with some violence. They pulled us up and actually really mistreated us at the airport! We had to pull rank and shout out Radio 1's name and they let us go. But they were gonna make us miss our flight and everything and they were being extremely rude! It's one of those things that you look back on and you think it was actually quite funny, but yeah, that was a bit of a nightmare.
What's the worst rip off in Ayia Napa?
I think things over there are pretty cheap, I haven't been ripped off.
If Ayia Napa were a drink, what would it be?
Maybe a Diet Coke - Ibiza would be full fat Coke (laughs)
