It's important for girls to get a smear test to make sure you're not at risk of getting cervical cancer. Find out exactly what a smear test is, what happens and how you go about getting one here ...
Cervical screening, pap test, smear.
It's a test to make sure we are not at risk of getting cancer of the cervix (neck of the womb).
Cervical cancer (cancer of the cervix) is one of the most common cancers in women and many women who've got it don't realise it for years. The earlier you find it, the easier cervical cancer is to treat, so it's important to get tested.
Once you're over 25 you'll automatically get free smear tests from the NHS, who'll write to you urging you to make an appointment. You'll be eligible for a free cervical screening test every three to five years until you're 64.
It's best if you don't have a smear test while you're on your period. The best time is two weeks after your period, but it doesn't have to be exact.
A doctor or nurse will take a sample of cells from your cervix and send them off to a laboratory to be tested. This isn't as scary as it might sound. It only takes a couple of minutes and, while it isn't exactly a barrel of laughs, it doesn't hurt.

Carly J, 11/10/2010 Complain about this commentI would go back to your doctor and ask again to be given a smear test! Im only 21 and I went to the doctor complaining of the same symptoms (irregular bleeding, bleeding after sex, and painful sex), she referred me to my nurse. My nurse initially wouldn't give me one but after some persistent talking she agree to give me the test. I have been called back for my second test as there were some abnormalities found. I hoping that everything will be ok, but if I didn't go I would still have another four years to wait until im 25. My advice would be to go back again and don't take no for an answer.
LittleSox, 06/08/2010 Complain about this commentSLM - i am 24 and have been refused a smear despite having all the signs, irregular bleeding, painful sex, bleeding after sex but yet still get refused.
SLM, 05/08/2010 Complain about this commentI find this article misleading... It has been written that it is important for 'girls' to get a smear test, but then further down note that you will be invited once turning 25 (I wouldn't think of girls as being 25). I have been looking for information as someone I know has been refused a smear test, despite having all symptoms, due to her being 21. Could something relating to this perhaps be added, as I am sure a number of people using this site are below 25?
