About this event
Favourite Elgar and Rachmaninov, a recent concerto and a tall tale that deserves to be told more often.
Elgar's colourful tour of Old London Town prefaces a concerto from Michael Berkeley, 'inspired,' he says, 'by my impressionable days as a chorister at Westminster Cathedral'.
Marc-André Hamelin returns in Rachmaninov's dazzling Rhapsody, while the brilliant Háry János suite relates the unlikely exploits of a veteran hussar during the Napoleonic era.

The Kodály was a bit of a disappointment after hearing the Budapest Festival Orchestra the evening before. Obviously the majority of the audience don't buy the hideously expensive programmes as they applauded after the 5th of the 6 movements of the Háry János suite!

My last Prom of the season, and a good way for me to sign off till next year - varied, colourful programme, vivid performances: couldn't have asked for more. Hamelin's perf. of the Rachmaninov Paganini Rhapsody was a welcome tonic after some of the flashier concerto performances in previous weeks - he just came in, sat down, no muss, no fuss, and just played the bejesus out of the piece! The Berkeley I felt was the kind of piece that would not reveal its secrets in just one hearing - there was however enough of interest to tempt me back to it some time in the future. And the Kodaly was great fun - another of those erstwhile favourites which don't pop up much anymore, to our loss...............
I know there's a week left to go, but for me the season ended tonight. It's been a blast. Can't wait for next year!
