Antonio Pappano returns with the Orchestra and Chorus of the Academy of Santa Cecilia, Rome, for a rare revival of Rossini’s magnum opus about the legendary founding fathers of Switzerland and the hero who shoots an apple from his son’s head.
Antonio Pappano returns with his Italian forces for a rare revival of Rossini's magnum opus about the legendary founding fathers of Switzerland and the hero who shoots an apple from his son's head.
The galloping climax of the overture is familiar, yet barely anything else from this grandest of operas has been heard at the Proms. Raising the roof with large-scale choral ensembles that look forward to Verdi and Wagner, the composer also makes extreme demands on his soloists.
Tenor John Osborn, one of several members of tonight's line-up who participated in the sensational Rome performances with which Pappano launched the orchestra's 2010-11 season, will tackle the challenging role of Arnold, with its fabled high Cs.
There will be two intervals of 30 minutes

Why is the 'full-screen' function on the programme notes not working? It makes it difficult to read them, especially when trying to follow texts.

Hi RobertCRH,
The Full Screen function for Programme Notes doesn't seem to be working in Internet Explorer for me either. I can use the zoom in Internet Explorer which helps a little bit.
Full screen does work for me in Firefox (v3 on Windows XP).
Thanks for the alert. We'll try to get this fixed for IE as fast as we can.

I can't make it work in IE8, but there is a work-around for IE9. It works if you switch it to think that the document meets the IE9 standards (which are closer to the formal standards than the IE8 interpretation that IE9 decides to use.)
To do this press F12, then Alt+9, then F12 again. The programme notes will reload and you can then display them full screen.

I can get the notes and the full screen function but the text unfortunately is too fuzzy to read. Any help for making it sharper?

I'm using the latest Ubuntu version of Linux (with audio via Banshee) and all features are working fine, except that clicking on "Listen in HD" yields a message that it's not available in my area (I'm in the USA).
