About this event

Music championed by or written in memory of the late Richard Hickox, a versatile and much-missed musician.

Britten's Variations is one of many British pieces championed by the late Richard Hickox, two of whose distinguished vocal collaborators, Ian Bostridge and Roderick Williams, are featured in Colin Matthews's new work, which Hickox commissioned.

The Requiem was recently voted the Nation's Favourite Mozart by Radio 3 listeners.

On listening to the radio preview I thought that this piece would be gimmicky. Gladly not so. Compared to the many world premieres that are worthy of only 1 Prom performance, I believe and hope that this very thoughtful and well designed piece, beautifully performed, will enter the repertoire as a piece worthy of many further performances.

Great if, in addition to the announcements re. photography and mobiles, we could ask people not to flash on their Blackberries and other small illuminated screens. Even greater if announcement could go out in Spanish & Italian as well as English. OK, I was asking for trouble standing at the back of the arena ("the shallow end"), but still ... You honestly wonder why they come. I guess 'We Will Rock You' was full.

Wonderful evening! Colin Matthews's multi-layered piece had real depth and moved me greatly, as did the amazing strings of the London Sinfonia. We are so lucky in this country to have easy access to such a magnificent programme of events.
