About this event

Youthful Proms first-timer, Hong Kong-born Fung Lam, unveils his Darwin-inspired BBC commission, his first for the BBC Symphony Orchestra. After the sparkling success of Kirill Gerstein's Proms appearance last year, the pianist returns with Rachmaninov's ever popular Second Piano Concerto, the work that crowned the composer's recovery from a period of crippling depression.

Prokofiev's bleak and powerful Sixth is perhaps the most personal and poignant of his symphonies, completed in the exhausted aftermath of the Second World War amid worsening pressure on the Soviet front.
