Winners' Day and Inspire Day 2008

Inspire Day 2008 BBC Proms Inspire - the scheme for young composers - continues to go from strength to strength. If ever anything were designed to banish the idea of the composer working in an ivory tower, cut off from reality, this is it. Inspire is all about creation and collaboration. At its centre is the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers' Competition, which is followed by workshops where winning composers get to hear their music brought to life, and to discuss it with their fellow composers and with the players themselves.

Inspire Day 2008
Last year's competition offered the five winners a professional commission for a chamber work. Each of them was given a slightly different brief, and an unorthodox instrumental line-up to tackle. Earlier this year the five composers came together to hear their finished pieces recorded by professional BBC musicians. The pieces were performed again in a special Proms Plus event on Saturday 26 July. And at the Inspire Day on Wednesday 6 August, we heard the pieces by 2008's five winners. Now they get on with writing their own new commissions for next year.
