5.45pm Proms Literary Festival
Stephen Venables, the first Briton to climb Everest without supplementary oxygen, and Chris Smith, former Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and mountaineering enthusiast, talk to Ian McMillan about their favourite mountain writing.
Edited version broadcast on Radio 3 during tonight's interval.
Following last night's depiction of domestic life in the Strauss household, we continue with his mountain-inspired final tone-poem, performed by the orchestra to which it was dedicated (and which premiered no fewer than nine of his 15 operas) under its current Chief Conductor, Fabio Luisi, here making his Proms debut.
Ever a favourite with Proms audiences, Lang Lang returns to perform Chopin's brilliantly virtuosic, Romantically poetic and mazurka-capped F minor Concerto.
And the evening opens with a revised, expanded version of a 2006 work by British-born, Berlin-based Rebecca Saunders.
